Gilbane is seeking a General Superintendent to be responsible for independently managing all field operations on a project up to $100M.

This position will be on the job site every day and will fill a key role on the project team.

In addition, General Superintendents work under the direction of experienced Sr. General Superintendents, Project Managers, and Project Executives on each job site, providing opportunities to learn new industry skills every day. You will promote Gilbane’s industry-recognized safety standards, coordinate the work of trade contractors, and participate in daily project meetings.

Responsibilities

  1. Direct the day-to-day coordination of Gilbane’s trade contractors and their sub-contractors to ensure high-quality work that meets the approved project schedule.
  2. Manage the project budget for general conditions and site services.
  3. Develop, document, and communicate the work plan regarding changes made in the field.
  4. Maintain a thorough understanding of contract documents to proactively anticipate potential problems.
  5. Obtain or verify that subcontractors obtain all necessary permits for construction purposes.
  6. Act as primary safety representative in the field and enforce safety compliance with all trades.
  7. Develop safety strategies and foster a safety culture across all project personnel.
  8. Conduct maintenance and planning of “workarounds,” shutdowns, and tie-ins.
  9. Establish credibility among owners, trade contractors, unions, and other project partners by maintaining a fair and trustworthy environment.
  10. Resolve jurisdictional disputes with support from the Sr. General Superintendent or Construction Executive.
  11. Lead contractor meetings regularly.
  12. Maintain daily reports and documentation using software tools.
  13. Create, manage, and update the project schedule, including contingency plans when necessary.
  14. Communicate schedule status, updates, and changes to the project team and trade contractors.
  15. Plan, coordinate, and manage jobsite logistics.
  16. Develop the Quality in Construction (QIC) plan in partnership with the Operations Excellence team, oversee its implementation, and make necessary adjustments.
  17. Manage Next150/Site Services material and crew needs.
  18. Train direct report Field Engineers and Superintendents on project needs, construction knowledge, and business acumen.
  19. Assist in development, preplanning, and preconstruction activities, including writing scopes of work and participating in buyout.
  20. Administer Time and Materials (T&M) tracking.
  21. Lead stretch and flex, daily huddles, and pre-task plans.
  22. Engage in community activities, fostering relationships in the local market.
  23. Collaborate closely with business development to align sales strategies, performance metrics, and client deliverables, positioning Gilbane as the “Builder of Choice.”
  24. Train direct reports on processes, procedures, and daily tasks.
  25. Manage workload and performance of direct reports, ensuring alignment with company standards.
  26. Foster a positive, inclusive work environment to motivate and engage team members.
  27. Assist in communicating company and department strategies to the team.
  28. Perform tasks typically assigned to more junior positions as needed.

Qualifications

Experience/Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction Management.
  • 10-15 years of experience managing $30-$100 million commercial/industrial construction projects or multiple projects in a lead superintendent role.
  • OSHA 30-hour certification.
  • STS-C Certification.
  • First Aid, CPR, AED, Stop the Bleed Training.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Healthcare Construction experience is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong technical and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Problem-solving skills and adaptability to changing needs.
  • Ability to participate in sales processes, interviews, and presentations.
  • Teamwork capability.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and industry-standard construction software.
  • Construction-document and drawing literacy, with knowledge of all phases of construction.
  • Experience and proficiency in all divisions of work, methods, materials, scheduling, and cost control.
  • Familiarity with Pull Planning Process.
  • Strong knowledge of construction safety processes and enforcement ability.
  • Ability to foster a “safety first” culture among tradespeople.
  • Experience supervising a project team.
