Job description

Shames Construction has been building commercial projects since 1987. As a 100% woman-owned general contractor, we specialize in retail, grocery, industrial, restaurant, and entertainment construction.

We partner with nationally recognized brands and have built our reputation on integrity, quality, and long-term client relationships.

We are seeking an experienced General Superintendent to join our California Operations team. This key field leadership position will work under senior field leadership to provide oversight, direction, and support to Superintendents and field teams across multiple active commercial construction projects.

The ideal candidate has significant experience with a mid-size commercial General Contractor and has progressed beyond managing a single jobsite to overseeing multiple projects and field teams.

We are looking for a hands-on, proactive leader who can mentor Superintendents, identify potential issues early, hold teams accountable, and help drive consistent field execution across projects.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
  • Provide leadership, direction, and support to Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents across multiple projects.
  • Work closely with senior field leadership, Project Managers, and Operations leadership to maintain consistent field standards and project execution.
  • Conduct regular jobsite visits to evaluate safety, quality, schedule, organization, documentation, and subcontractor performance.
  • Serve as a senior field resource when complex construction, scheduling, subcontractor, logistics, or operational issues arise.
  • Identify potential issues early and work with project teams to develop solutions before they affect schedule, cost, quality, or client relationships.
  • Participate in project turnover, startup, mobilization, logistics, phasing, sequencing, and manpower planning.
  • Review project schedules and support Superintendents with short-term planning, milestone tracking, critical activities, and recovery plans.
  • Support projects involving occupied facilities, phased construction, accelerated schedules, and work outside traditional operating hours.
  • Review drawings, specifications, RFIs, submittals, schedules, and other project documentation as needed to support field execution.
  • Monitor subcontractor performance and help hold trade partners accountable for manpower, safety, quality, schedule, and contractual responsibilities.
  • Assist field teams with resolving trade conflicts, scope coordination, and other construction issues.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents.
  • Assist with onboarding and training new field employees.
  • Support senior field leadership with staffing, Superintendent assignments, and upcoming field manpower needs.
  • Reinforce company procedures, documentation requirements, and field expectations across projects.
  • Ensure daily reports, progress photos, safety documentation, and other required field records are accurate and timely.
  • Promote consistent and effective use of Procore and company field technology.
  • Reinforce OSHA requirements and company safety standards and participate in corrective action when concerns are identified.
  • Monitor workmanship and quality control and ensure deficiencies are addressed promptly.
  • Support punch list, turnover, final inspections, and project closeout.
  • Communicate significant field risks, staffing concerns, subcontractor issues, and project challenges to senior field and Operations leadership.
  • Travel regularly to active project locations.

The successful candidate will have strong field credibility, sound judgment, extensive commercial construction knowledge, and a proactive, solutions-oriented approach.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working for a commercial General Contractor, preferably a mid-size GC.

  • Strong knowledge of commercial construction means, methods, sequencing, and field operations.
  • Experience managing commercial projects from startup through completion and closeout.
  • Strong understanding of schedules, critical path activities, sequencing, manpower planning, and recovery scheduling.
