Job summary

Skipcollc in Valparaiso, IN is seeking a Construction General Laborer to support day-to-day operations across commercial and residential sites. This hands-on role requires travel to multiple job sites weekly and close collaboration with Site Supervisors to keep projects clean, organized, and safe.

You will perform site prep, material handling, basic carpentry and maintenance tasks, operate power tools and light machinery, and help with safety reporting and site teardown while staying flexible

Responsibilities

• Site Prep & Maintenance: Prepare, clean, and organize sites for daily operations.
• Site improvements: Remove vegetation and other materials, replace when required.
• Material Handling: Transport and handle materials, tools, and equipment safely across sites.
• Manual Labor: Perform tasks with minimal supervision and adapt to project needs.
• Temporary Structures: Install and assemble scaffolding, ladders, enclosures, and signage.
• Machinery Operation: Safely work with forklifts, skid steers, and rental equipment while assisting operators.
• Tool Operation: Run pumps, generators, shop vacs, and power tools.
• Demolition: Assist with light demolition and debris removal.
• Handyman Tasks: Basic carpentry, painting, caulking, electrical, and plumbing as needed.
• Reporting: Track daily assignments for progress reporting.
• Shop Care: Maintain and organize shop tools and equipment.

OVERVIEW

The Construction General Laborer supports day-to-day project operations across both commercial and residential job sites. Working closely with Site Superintendents and the General Superintendent, this role is highly dynamic, hands-on, and requires daily flexibility. The laborer must travel to multiple job sites on a weekly—and sometimes daily—basis. The primary goal is assisting with physical tasks while maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment for our teams and subcontractors.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Site Prep & Maintenance: Prepare, clean, and organize commercial and residential sites for daily operations.
• Site improvements: Remove vegetation, plantings, other land and hardscape materials. If required replace with new
• Material Handling: Transport and handle construction materials, tools, and equipment safely across sites.
• Manual Labor: Execute manual tasks with minimal supervision, adapting quickly to evolving project needs.
• Temporary Structures: Install and assemble scaffolding, ladders, enclosures, and job site signage.
• Machinery Operation: Safely work alongside heavy and light machinery, including forklifts, skid steers, lulls, and rental equipment while assisting the operators.
• Tool Operation: Run basic site equipment such as pumps, generators, shop vacs, and various power tools.
• Demolition: Assist with light demolition, debris removal, and general site teardown work.
• Handyman Tasks: Perform basic tasks in carpentry, painting, caulking, electrical work, and plumbing as required.
• Reporting: Track and document daily assignments accurately to assist with project progress reporting.
• Shop Care: Maintain, clean, and organize shop tools and equipment.
• Safety commitment: Consistently maintains a safety-first mindset, following site protocols and OSHA guidelines.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

• Experience: Proven construction labor background spanning multiple project types (commercial and residential).
• Technical Skill: Hands-on experience operating power tools, equipment, and construction machinery.
• Safety First: Consistent safety-first mindset, strictly following site protocols and best practices.
• Scheduling Flexibility: Dependable and available for night shifts, weekends, and off-hours work.
• Autonomy: Highly organized with the ability to prioritize and complete tasks independently with minimal supervision.
• Driving (Preferred/Not Required): Ability to safely pull a trailer with a truck is highly preferred.
• Soft Skills: Friendly, professional, adaptable, and thrives in collaborative, fast-paced environments.
• Problem Solving: Skilled in real-time problem-solving and decision-making under pressure.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Must be able to work in an environment that requires a strong sense of physicality
• Capable of standing and walking for extended periods in various job site environments
• Physically able to climb ladders, bend, crouch, and access confined spaces as needed
• Able to safely lift and carry up to 50 to 75 pounds
• Willing and available to work off-hours, including nights and weekends, to meet project and client needs
