Job description

Saint Mary’s College is seeking a dependable and hands-onGeneral Services Technician to join our General Services team. This position plays an important role in supporting campus events, daily operations, and the overall appearance and functionality of College facilities.

The General Services Technician provides event setup and tear-down support, including the delivery, setup, relocation, and storage of tables, chairs, risers, flags, floor coverings, pipe and drape, audio/visual equipment, and other event-related materials. The position also assists with office moves, furniture relocation, large deliveries, recycling collection, and stocking of departmental supplies throughout campus.

The position will also assist with custodial responsibilities and respond to custodial needs and emergencies as assigned. The successful candidate will be comfortable working in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment and will take pride in providing excellent service to students, faculty, staff, and campus guests.

This position will work closely with the General Services Supervisor and may provide direction to student workers during event setup and tear-down activities. The ability to read and follow work orders and room diagrams, organize work efficiently, meet deadlines, and work effectively as part of a team is essential.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Set up and tear down tables, chairs, risers, flags, pipe and drape, floor tarps, and other event equipment.
  • Assist with audio/visual setups under the direction of the General Services Supervisor.
  • Transport, deliver, unload, set up, and store equipment and supplies for campus events.
  • Operate College vehicles for on-campus and off-campus deliveries.
  • Perform office moves, including relocating furniture, records, supplies, and equipment.
  • Deliver and stock departmental and central supply materials.
  • Deliver large copy paper orders and other large shipments.
  • Assist with unloading and transporting large deliveries throughout campus.
  • Complete daily recycling pickups.
  • Assist with custodial work and respond to custodial emergencies as needed.
  • Operate custodial equipment and other equipment necessary to perform assigned duties.
  • Attend weekly event meetings and follow event safety procedures.
  • Provide direction and assistance to student workers during event setup and tear-down.
  • Work assigned weekends as part of a rotating schedule.
  • Provide courteous and professional customer service to the campus community.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of special event, facilities, general services, or related experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to operate heavy cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to operate a forklift; annual training will be provided.
  • Ability to read and understand work orders and room diagrams.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and complete work efficiently.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including walking, lifting, climbing, crawling, pushing, pulling, and carrying.
  • Ability to regularly lift and carry items weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to routinely assemble and lift objects weighing up to 30 pounds overhead.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, rain, sleet, and snow.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with stage assembly and event setup.
  • Knowledge of event and technical safety regulations.
  • Experience using hand and power tools.
  • Experience with custodial equipment and general facility operations.
  • Forklift operation training or certification.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety practices, including Blood-Borne Pathogens, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and Ladder Safety.
  • Previous experience working in a college, university, event, facilities, or general services environment.
Schedule

This is a full-time position with a schedule that may vary based on campus events and operational needs. The position will participate in a rotating weekend schedule and may require occasional evening, weekend, or extended hours to support College events and activities.

The General Services Technician must be flexible and available to work outdoors and during varying weather conditions as needed.
