Job summary

Sweet Briar College is seeking an entry-level Set Up Custodian to assist with campus event setups, move furniture, and maintain clean, safe spaces across university buildings. The role emphasizes customer service and teamwork in a facilities environment.

You will work Monday–Friday 7:00 am–3:30 pm, with occasional evenings or weekends. Physical activity, knowledge of cleaning chemicals, and the ability to operate equipment under supervision are essential for success.

Qualifications

• Experience with mechanical cleaning equipment and general cleaning knowledge.
• Ability to read, interpret setup diagrams or instructions.
• Must be organized, able to prioritize tasks and work with supervisors.

Responsibilities

• Set up tables, chairs, and equipment for campus events and communicate with stakeholders.
• Break down and store equipment after events.
• Monitor inventory of event supplies like tables, chairs, and canopies.
• Strip and wax floors as required.
• Handle daily recycling collection from campus and housing areas.
• Clean various floor types using appropriate equipment and methods.
• Move heavy furniture and equipment as needed and use ladders if required.
• Complete work orders in a timely manner and coordinate with team.

Job Summary/Objective

The purpose of this position is to assist in the set up for campus events and physical movement of campus resources. The Set-Up Custodian position will interact with students, employees and guests and will need to have a keen customer service acumen. This position is integral to the success of the college.

Position Type/Expected Work Hours

Full time, Monday-Friday 7 am -3:30 pm, some evening/weekend availability/Overtime will be required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None

Essential Responsibilities

• Set up of tables, chairs etc. for various campus events and communicate well with stakeholders
• Break down any equipment, furniture, etc. after campus events as needed
• Monitor inventory of tables, chairs, canopies etc.
• Perform stripping and waxing of VCT floors
• Daily recycling collection from campus proper and apartments/homes
• Cleaning of various floors with mechanical equipment
• Adjust, clean and maintain specialty equipment including floor scrubbers, carpet cleaning machine, etc.
• Cleaning of campus vehicle fleet
• Mopping VCT tile floors, hardwood floors, tile floors, marble floors, and stairwells
• Distribution of supplies to academic, residential and administrative buildings
• Empty and clean trash and recycling receptacles
• Wash interior and exterior windows, glass doors, and mirrors
• Must handle various cleaning solvents and chemicals in the correct way set forth by supervisor, OSHA regulations, EPA, State Health Department, etc.
• Work effectively as part of housekeeping team
• Move heavy furniture, supplies, and different equipment when needed
• Able to climb and use 6' and 8' ladders
• Complete work orders assigned by supervisor in a timely manner
• Willingness to learn mechanical operation of housekeeping equipment, become van certified and offer support/assistance to other team members

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Experience in use of mechanical cleaning equipment
• Requires general knowledge of cleaning terms and safety procedures related to hazardous chemicals
• Ability to interpret set up diagrams
• Ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions
• Must be well organized and able to prioritize work
• Ability to drive a pick-up truck with lift gate
• Clean MVR

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in hospitality or comparable customer service position

Work Environment

Work Environment: Work is both indoors and outdoors. Must be prepared to work in both environments year round

Physical Demands

Extended periods of standing/walking are required, ability to lift 50+ lbs., moving 96-gallon recycling carts stooping/kneeling/climbing step ladders are required.

Salary

The hourly range for this position is $16.00-17.00 per hour. This is commensurate with education and experience and will be determined in accordance with institutional guidelines.
