Job summary

Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, GA is seeking a full-time Craft Worker to inspect, repair and maintain building systems and equipment. The role offers a pay rate of $19.21 per hour.

You will plan repairs using blueprints or manuals, perform general maintenance, use hand and power tools, and support inmate safety. Requirements include a high school diploma; correctional experience is preferred and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Experience in correctional setting is highly desirable.

• Heating/Air Conditioning experience preferred.

Description

Rate of pay: $19.21

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Inspects and identifies areas, equipment, or machines in need of repair.
• Troubleshoots issues to determine necessary repairs.
• Plans repair work using the building's blueprints or equipment manual as needed.
• Performs general repairs that do not require a specialized technician. Examples may include repairing drywall, painting, and repairing doors and other building fixtures.
• Performs routine maintenance on building systems.
• Cleans and assists with upkeep of the facilities.
• Ensures prompt and appropriate assistance to inmates in the event of injury, illness, and emotional trauma.
• Orders supplies and materials needed for repairs and maintenance.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge Skills/Abilities:

• Ability to follow instructions from supervisors or senior maintenance workers.
• Knowledge of general carpentry and repair.
• Ability to use hand tools and power tools.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Ability to work after hours, over weekends and on public holidays with short or no notice.

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Experience in correctional setting is highly desirable.
• On-the-job training offered.
• Valid driver’s license
• Heating/Air Conditioning experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
• Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
• Frequent grasping, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending, and twisting.
