Job summary

POSITION DESCRIPTION
General Maintenance Technician

Pay Grade(s): 7 ($25.26+ DOE)

Purpose:

The General Maintenance Technician performs routine maintenance, repairs, and general upkeep of Tribal buildings, facilities, grounds, and equipment to ensure safe, clean, and functional work environments. This position independently performs routine maintenance assignments, minor repairs, preventative maintenance, and grounds maintenance while assisting experienced maintenance staff with larger projects and more complex building systems. The General Maintenance Technician is expected to demonstrate sound judgment, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to safety while developing additional technical skills through training and hands-on experience.

Essential Functions.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to buildings, facilities, equipment, and grounds.
  • Complete preventative maintenance tasks and routine inspections as assigned to help maintain safe and efficient facility operations.
  • Perform basic repairs including painting, patching drywall, replacing hardware, assembling furniture, changing ceiling tiles, repairing fixtures, and performing minor carpentry and other general maintenance tasks.
  • Identify routine maintenance issues and determine when repairs require additional technical expertise or escalation to senior maintenance staff or outside contractors.
  • Assist experienced maintenance staff with repairs, installations, preventative maintenance, and improvement projects involving HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, or other building systems.
  • Perform landscaping, lawn care, weed control, debris removal, and general grounds maintenance.
  • Perform snow and ice removal from sidewalks, entrances, parking areas, and other assigned locations using appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Move, load, unload, assemble, and transport furniture, equipment, supplies, and materials to support departmental and organizational operations.
  • Assist with room setups, office moves, event support, and facility readiness activities.
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, maintenance equipment, lawn equipment, snow removal equipment, and other tools appropriate to assigned duties.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, work areas, and storage locations in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
  • Maintain basic maintenance records, work orders, material usage, and preventative maintenance documentation as assigned.
  • Follow all applicable safety policies, procedures, and federal, state, Tribal, and organizational requirements while performing assigned work.
  • Participate in training to develop additional maintenance, building systems, and equipment knowledge and skills.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities.
  • Knowledge of general building maintenance, facility operations, grounds maintenance, or construction practices.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs safely and effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Basic troubleshooting skills to identify maintenance issues and determine when additional technical expertise is required.
  • Working knowledge of common hand tools, power tools, maintenance equipment, and their safe operation.
  • Ability to safely operate lawn care, landscaping, and snow removal equipment.
  • Ability to read and follow work orders, written instructions, equipment manuals, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to prioritize assigned work and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently on routine assignments and collaboratively with maintenance staff on larger projects.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and building occupants.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate maintenance records.
  • Dependability, initiative, and a willingness to learn new maintenance skills and techniques.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe and professional work environment.
Minimum Qualifications (education, experience, skills):
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of experience in building maintenance, facilities maintenance, construction, carpentry, landscaping, grounds maintenance, property maintenance, or another related hands-on field; or an equivalent combination of education, vocational training, and relevant experience.
  • Experience using common hand and power tools.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age with a Valid Drivers License.
Preferred Qualifications (education, experience, skills):
  • Two (2) or more years of experience performing building or facilities maintenance.
  • Experience performing basic carpentry, painting, drywall repair, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanical, or other building maintenance work.
  • Experience operating landscaping, groundskeeping, or snow removal equipment.
  • Trade school coursework, maintenance certifications, apprenticeship experience, or other related vocational training.
  • Forklift, aerial lift, or other equipment certifications are desirable.
Physical Requirements.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, perform repetitive tasks involving standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crouching, and work in both indoor and outdoor environments - including adverse weather - while operating tools and equipment requiring manual dexterity and physical stamina.
Work Environment.
  • Some travel may be required on small aircraft or ferry.
  • Certain positions at Tlingit and Haida may have exposure to certain hazardous materials or conditions. The supervisor will review these if applicable.
