Job summary

The University of South Carolina is seeking a General Maintenance Tech II to support the DAF Facilities Maintenance group on the Columbia campus. This full-time role focuses on skilled cross-functional maintenance including carpentry, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing, with emphasis on safety and code compliance.

The position requires a technical school accreditation and 2+ years of related experience, a valid driver’s license, and a willingness to work a 37.5-hour week from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm,

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and implements a safe corrective maintenance program for carpentry, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing within assigned buildings.
  • Submits, receives, and processes work orders; coordinates with supervisors and coworkers.
  • Plans, inspects, verifies, communicates, and resolves facility maintenance issues.
  • Ensures all facility systems remain in safe working order and compliant with national/local codes.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience
  • Requires job related accreditation from a technical school or an applicable skilled trades program and 2 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Under limited supervision, maintains and implements a safe and effective corrective maintenance program for complex operations involving carpentry, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems within assigned buildings. Responsibilities include submitting, receiving, and accurately processing work orders; coordinating with supervisors and coworkers; and performing tasks such as planning, inspecting, verifying, communicating, and resolving facility maintenance issues.Ensures that all facility systems remain in safe working order and compliant with applicable national and local codes, while consistently demonstrating professionalism in conduct, appearance, and work practices.

Assists in coordinating the installation of new and modified maintenances related systems under the direction of the supervisor. Responsibilities include reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and drawings; consulting with University Project Managers, contractors, and subcontractors to provide information on existing systems that may be affected by construction or renovation projects; offering guidance on requirements for future projects; and troubleshooting new or modified systems to ensure proper functionality and compliance with operational standards.

Participates in meetings and training sessions related to customer service, safety, and continuous improvement to support departmental goals and professional development.
