University of South Carolina is hiring a Custodian and Housekeeping Maintenance for USC Upstate in Spartanburg, SC. This full-time, 40-hour-per-week position operates on a 2nd shift from 4:00 pm to 12:30 am with occasional weekends and overtime as needed.

The role includes floor maintenance, cleaning and minor repairs, event setup, and routine maintenance tasks. Required are a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license, and OSHA training.

Responsibilities

  • Floor maintenance: vacuum, shampoo carpets, dust mop, strip wax on floors.
  • Dust and clean furniture, dust boards, realign chairs, vacuum upholstery.
  • Clean glass, dust and spot clean walls, remove cobwebs.
  • Clean and sanitize toilets, urinals, sinks, and drinking fountains; polish fixtures.
  • Refill soap, towel and tissue dispensers; empty waste baskets and sort recyclables.

Shift Schedule

2nd shift: Hours would be from 4:00 pm – 12:30 am, 40 hours per week. Must have the flexibility to work various shifts and/or weekends. Weekend Crew schedules would be scheduled on a rotational basis year-round. Must also have the ability to work overtime if required.

Salary

Anticipated Hiring Range $36,608 - $43,994; Salary commensurate with education and experience.

Job Duties
  • Floor maintenance: Vacuum, shampoo carpets, dust mop, strip wax tile and hard surfaces floors.
  • Furniture, sills, shelves: Dust and spot clean blackboards and erasers, realign classroom chairs, vacuum upholstered furniture.
  • Doors, walls, ceilings and windows: clean glass, dust and spot clean, remove cobwebs.
  • Fixtures: clean and sanitize toilets, urinals, sinks and drinking fountains, polish fixtures, clean mirrors.
  • Containers: refill soap, towel and tissue dispensers.
  • Waste containers: empty waste baskets and wipe clean. Be able to recognize and separate recyclable material from containers and take it to collection bins.
  • Maintain equipment (vacuum, buffers, etc.).
  • Serve as custodial floater for 2nd shift.
  • Remove and replace light bulbs, clean light fixtures of debris, perform minor electrical and plumbing repairs.
  • As assigned through the SchoolDude work order system perform assigned repairs and maintenance as assigned which will include: general maintenance, painting, carpentry, basic plumbing and electrical that does not require certification.
  • Under hazardous weather conditions will perform snow and ice removal.
  • Must be able to handle minor emergency repairs in each of these areas.
  • Provide assistance set up for special events. Event set-ups/flips/breakdowns: Set up required resources (tables, chairs, stages, podiums, flooring, stanchions, etc.) for each venue event as requested by customer. All set-ups will be neat, clean, orderly and in good working condition. Venues will be set up and broken down as outlined in work order and instructed by Facilities Special Event Coordinator.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience: Typically holds a high school diploma or GED. Requires 2 or more years of job related experience.
  • Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials: Valid driver’s license. Successfully complete annual OSHA training.
  • Preferred Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and three years of related trade area and/or general maintenance experience. Proficiency with electronic work order systems and Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: A negative pre-employment drug screen is required. Subject to post-employment drug and alcohol testing per policy HR 1.95. A successful background check and good driving record is required.
  • Ability to understand, carry out routine oral and written instructions as well as work independently and to direct work of others.
  • Ability to recognize, acknowledge and troubleshoot solutions as they arise.
  • Ability to receive and reliably execute oral and written instructions; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; prioritize and plan schedules; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the general public.
  • Effective interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Must be a self-starter with knowledge in operational procedures, facility capabilities, event-related services and technical requirements for events in indoor and outdoor venues.
  • Considerable knowledge and skill in use of tools, equipment and materials used in general building maintenance applicable to the job.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments of equipment.
  • Ability to work with computer and software systems for maintenance records.
  • Exhibit large degree of flexibility with assignments.
  • Must have knowledge of all campus buildings to be able to perform work in any building.
  • Follow OSHA standards and guidelines when performing duties.
