Job summary

The University of Vermont Health Network is seeking a skilled General Maintenance professional to join the CVMC facilities team. This role performs preventive and corrective maintenance across boilers, pumps, and HVAC systems, reading blueprints and following safety protocols.

Qualifications

• One year of formal training in a skilled trade or two to three years of on-the-job training in plant maintenance.
• Ability to perform basic plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repairs.
• Experience with preventive maintenance of boilers, pumps, compressors, and fans.
• Familiarity with DDC temperature control systems, oil-fired water heaters, and automatic water softeners.
• Ability to read blueprints and repair instructions.

Responsibilities

• Perform a wide range of preventive and corrective maintenance tasks to ensure safety, function, and comfort of buildings and equipment.
• Diagnose and resolve maintenance issues independently; respond to emergencies as needed.
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment status, and repairs.
• Respond to maintenance and security calls from staff; collaborate with team members and other departments.
• Rotate shifts and perform seasonal tasks such as mowing, snow removal.

This role is responsible for performing a wide range of preventive and corrective maintenance tasks to ensure the safety, functionality, and comfort of our buildings and equipment. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical knowledge, a proactive attitude, and a commitment to safety and service excellence.

CORE COPENTENCIES & SKILLS

1. Technical Proficiency

• Demonstrated ability to perform basic plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repairs.

• Skilled in preventive maintenance of equipment such as boilers, pumps, compressors, and fans.

• Familiarity with DDC temperature control systems, oil-fired water heaters, and automatic water softeners.

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical repair instructions.

2. Problem Solving & Decision Making

• Capable of diagnosing and resolving maintenance issues independently.

• Uses sound judgment when responding to emergency calls or unexpected repairs.

• Maintains accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment status, and repairs.

3. Safety & Compliance

• Adheres to all safety protocols including universal precautions, PPE use, and hazardous material handling.

• Conducts and documents monthly fire drills and emergency generator tests.

• Reports policy or safety violations promptly and follows escalation procedures.

4. Communication & Teamwork

• Responds professionally to maintenance and security calls from staff.

• Collaborates effectively with team members and other departments.

• Provides supervision and guidance to diversional work programs as needed.

5. Adaptability & Reliability

• Willingness to rotate shifts and respond to off-hour emergencies.

• Flexibility to work across multiple facilities under CVMC, Inc.

• Performs seasonal tasks such as mowing, raking, and snow removal.

EXPERIENCE

One year of formal training in a skilled trade or two to three years of on-the-job training experience in plant maintenance.
