Job summary

Looking Upwards, Inc. is seeking a detail-oriented accountant to support monthly closings, maintain the general ledger for Hammet Court Apartments, and assist with annual budgeting for our nonprofit programs in Portsmouth, RI.

This role reports to the Accounting Supervisor, requires strong analytical skills, independence, and the ability to work with minimal supervision to meet reporting deadlines. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel, and experience with nonprofit accounting is

Job description

OThis person reports to the Accounting Supervisor. The person filing this position should be familiar with accounting systems, and should possess strong analytical skills, and work efficiently with minimal supervision and exercise independent judgement. This person should also be able to accomplish key responsibilities within established guidelines and deadlines.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Bank Accounts — complete monthly reconciliation of accounts.
  • Maintain the General Ledger for Hammet Court Apartments.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries.
  • Assist with the development of the annual budget.
  • Reconcile Fundraising activity monthly.
  • Monitor food stamps, petty cash, and personal needs spending to comply with State (BHDDH), Federal (Social Security) and best practices.
  • Responsible for conducting Financial Reviews of Personal Needs.
  • Redeem Food Stamps for Clients and Reconcile Food Stamps for the agency and the Directors.
  • Responsible for all banking activities associated with Petty Cash, Personal Needs, and Client Checking and Saving accounts. Work with banks to set up or to add/delete signers on the bank accounts.
  • Review client financial statements on monthly basis and follow up with Administrators if trends are inconsistent with policies and procedures. Research discrepancies and large fluctuations. Report on variances for Administrators.
  • Assist the Directors in establishing annual budgets. Monitor budget against monthly performance.
  • Annual reporting to the State for unclaimed property.
  • Special Projects — US Census Reports, Property tax reports, and other projects as needed.
RELATED RESPONSIBILITES
  • Assist with the preparation of the annual external audit.
  • Prepare and develop in conjunction with the Administrators the annual Residential budgets that will be used to create the overall Looking Upwards annual budget. Other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting, finance or business management is required.

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

1-3 years of accounting experience. Also, experience working in a non-profit environment is preferred.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Experience utilizing Microsoft Office products, such as Word and Excel. Strong written and verbal communication skills are preferred.

Pay: From $25.25 per hour
