Job description

Position Title: General Diesel Mechanic II
Department: Ferry Operations
Report To: Lead Mechanic
Salary: $35.00 / hour

Position Summary

Provide a full range of maintenance and mechanical repair services for boats, machinery, and resort vehicles. The General Diesel Mechanic II conducts general maintenance and repairs to ensure proper upkeep of all vehicles, boats, equipment, and various utility systems, including small engines such as water pumps, concrete mixers, landscape motor tools, generators, diesel and gasoline engines. The Mechanic II always provides excellent customer service to prospective and current guests and customers.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Work with the Lead Mechanic to perform general preventive maintenance on the company’s boats, vehicles, and machinery equipment.
• Conduct preventive maintenance checks and take necessary action to ensure daily operations of the vessels, including pre‑operation inspections and oil changes.
• Repair gasoline or diesel‑powered engines.
• Remove pumps, generators, and other engine accessories using hand tools.
• Remove covers of gear and clutch units or remove entire assemblies in small vehicles and machinery as instructed.
• Wash and clean disassembled parts.
• Repair electrical automotive equipment such as installing batteries, terminals, lights, starters, modules, and alternators; install new equipment, electric panels, and new wiring circuits.
• Order all relevant spare parts to ensure adequate stock; maintain orderly storage and record keeping.
• Use test devices, engine analyzers, gauges, and other equipment.
• Perform diagnostic tests to locate malfunctioning systems.
• Assist in swapping out engines, reassembling repaired engines, and testing motors.
• Be available for emergency work when a passenger ferry boat requires repair; the minimum paid time for such calls is 3 hours.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 or older and possess a current driver’s license.
• Education and/or training in engineering, mechanical or electrical engineering, or equivalent experience preferred.
• Intermediate computer skills.
• Relevant mechanical and parts experience in this or a related field.
• Specialize in marine diesel maintenance with a minimum of two years’ experience.
• Must be able to work in confined spaces; cannot be claustrophobic.
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, and grasping.
• Good manual dexterity and hand‑eye coordination.
• Ability to carry and lift up to 50 lbs. regularly.
• Ability to withstand dust, pollen, and gas fumes on a regular basis.
• Safety awareness when working around moving mechanical parts.
• Ability to work outside in extreme heat and/or cold temperatures for a full 8‑hour day.
