Job summary

State of Maine – Maine Department of Professional & Financial Regulation, Bureau of Insurance seeks a General Counsel to provide strategic legal leadership and oversee the insurance regulatory function. The role requires counseling staff, shaping policy, and guiding the Bureau through complex legal matters in Maine.

The successful candidate will have substantial experience in regulatory and administrative law, strong written and oral communication, and the ability to translate complex issues

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
• Minimum five (5) years as an attorney and at least three (3) years in a related regulatory field.
• Regulatory or administrative law experience preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal guidance to staff attorneys across Bureau divisions.
• Advise on pending and proposed legislation.
• Collaborate with Bureau staff to resolve legal and regulatory interpretation issues.
• Coordinate with the Office of the Attorney General as needed.
• Support the Superintendent on matters affecting Bureau operations and policy.
