Job summary

The Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, Bureau des Insurance, seeks a skilled General Counsel to provide strategic legal leadership and oversee insurance regulatory matters in Maine. You will advise leadership, guide staff attorneys, and help shape public policy while safeguarding consumers.

Key responsibilities include advising on legislation, resolving regulatory interpretation issues, coordinating with the Attorney General, and supporting the Superintendent on Bureau

Qualifications

  • A law degree from an accredited law school.
  • Five+ years’ experience as a practicing attorney and at least three years in a related field.
  • Experience in regulatory, financial regulatory, or administrative law is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal guidance to staff attorneys across Bureau divisions.
  • Advise on pending and proposed legislation.
  • Collaborate with Bureau staff to resolve legal and regulatory interpretation issues.
  • Coordinate with the Office of the Attorney General as needed.
  • Support the Superintendent on matters impacting Bureau operations and policy.
