Job summary

The Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, Bureau of Insurance, seeks a skilled General Counsel to provide strategic legal leadership and oversee regulatory matters affecting the insurance industry in Maine.

As the Bureau’s primary legal advisor, you will guide staff, advise on legislation, coordinate with the Office of the Attorney General, and support the Superintendent on operational and policy issues critical to consumer protection and professional licensing.

Qualifications

• Juris doctor degree from an accredited school.
• Minimum of five years’ experience as an attorney.
• At least three years in regulatory or administrative law.
• Admission to practice in Maine or ability to obtain within six months.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal guidance to staff attorneys across Bureau divisions.
• Advise on pending and proposed legislation affecting the Bureau.
• Collaborate with Bureau staff to resolve legal and regulatory issues.
• Coordinate with the Office of the Attorney General as needed.

A minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a practicing attorney and at least three (3) years’ experience in a field directly related to the area of assignment.
