Oasis is a small independent consumer health testing platform based in Los Angeles, and we are hiring our first General Counsel. This is not a quiet in-house role: we publish independent test results and face legal pressure from larger players.

You will be the legal owner for the whole company, reporting directly to the founder. You will guide strategy, manage litigation, regulatory issues, contracts, IP, and governance while keeping operations lean.

Qualifications

• Extensive litigation experience in in-house or publisher environments.
• Strong grounding in defamation and false advertising law.
• Experience defending publishers and content platforms is a plus.
• Ability to navigate FTC, Prop 65, state consumer protection issues.
• Capable of directing outside counsel and managing legal spend.

Oasis is an independent consumer health testing platform used by over one million people. We lab-test the products people put in and on their bodies, including bottled water, filters, supplements, and skincare, and publish the results alongside the underlying lab data. Our scoring algorithm is deterministic and open source. We don't take money from brands to influence scores.

The role

We're hiring our first General Counsel. This is not a quiet in-house job. Oasis publishes independent test results about real products from real companies, and that work draws legal pressure — often from companies with far deeper pockets than ours. We need a lawyer who sees that as the job, not a bug.

We're a small independent company, not a corporation with an unlimited legal budget. We're looking for a champion: someone who understands our economic constraints and can still fight the noble fight — creatively, efficiently, and without blinking. You'll be the legal owner for the whole company, working directly with the founder.

What you'll do

• Manage active litigation and disputes, including directing and coordinating outside counsel, controlling legal spend, and driving strategy
• Run pre-publication legal review of test results, scores, and content before they go live
• Own regulatory questions across FTC advertising rules, California Prop 65, and state consumer protection laws
• Negotiate and manage commercial contracts, including lab testing agreements and partnerships
• Handle trademark and IP matters
• Manage corporate governance, insurance, and compliance for a Delaware LLC operating in California
• Build lightweight legal processes that let a small team publish fast without publishing recklessly

Who you are

• A believer first. You care that consumers have a right to know what's in the products they buy, and that matters more to you than maximizing your comp
• Very good at what you do, with real experience across litigation and in-house, media, or publisher-side work — we care more about judgment and fight than years on a resume
• Strong grounding in defamation, First Amendment, and false advertising law. Experience defending publishers, reviewers, ratings platforms, or consumer advocacy organizations is a major plus
• Scrappy and resourceful. You know how to win, or hold the line, without a big-firm war chest behind you
• Comfortable being the only lawyer in the building and making judgment calls with incomplete information
• Direct communicator. You tell the founder the real risk in plain English, once, and then help execute

Compensation

We'll be upfront: we're a small independent company, and cash compensation is below big-firm market. Equity is meaningful. If you're optimizing for salary, this isn't the role. If you want your legal work to matter to a million people, it might be.
