The University of Maryland Eastern Shore at Shady Grove (UMES at Shady Grove) invites applications for General Associate – Subject Matter Expert (SME) Facilitators & Workshop Instructors within the School of Business, Engineering, Applied Sciences, Technology, and Tourism Management (S-BEAST-TM).

  • OTHER: REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: OTHER: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Subject Matter Expert (SME) Instructors bring real-world practice directly into the classroom, equipping adult learners, career switchers, and upskilling professionals with market-relevant skills. Offerings are delivered in flexible formats, including face‑to‑face, hybrid, and fully online modalities.


Salary Range

Salary Range: $50.00 – $125.00 per hour (commensurate with experience, subject matter discipline, professional licensure, and instruction modality). Instructional pay may be structured as a flat per-class stipend or an hourly rate based on class duration and preparation requirements.


Primary Responsibilities


  • Applied Instruction & Facilitation: Deliver short‑term workshops, accelerated bootcamps, and specialized professional certificate courses in face‑to‑face, hybrid, or online learning environments.

  • Instructional Content & Course Design: Translate industry expertise, professional standards, and industry licensure requirements into practical, high‑impact learning modules, practical exercises, and real‑world case studies.

  • Practitioner Engagement: Mentor adult learners and working professionals, offering practical insights, actionable feedback, and industry perspectives to bridge theoretical knowledge and professional application.

  • Educational Technology: Effectively leverage the University’s Learning Management System (LMS) and digital tools to distribute course materials, track learner progress, and facilitate discussions or virtual sessions.

  • Workforce Alignment: Collaborate with academic leadership and industry partners to ensure curriculum content remains aligned with current market demands and certification standards.


Physical Demands

May require extended periods of standing, bending, stooping, sitting at desk. May require lifting. Requires communication with a variety of constituents externally and internally. Requires operation of a variety of office equipment.


Preferences


  • Active, recognized professional licensure or industry certifications (e.g., CFP®, CPA, PE, PMP, CCM, or discipline‑equivalent credentials).

  • An earned Doctorate in a related field.

  • Prior experience delivering corporate training, professional development seminars, bootcamps, or higher education courses.

  • Demonstrated experience with online or hybrid instructional tools (e.g., Canvas, Zoom).

  • Experience with applied learning methods, including project‑based learning, lab demonstrations, simulations, or case‑study facilitation.
