Job summary

Bain & Company is seeking a driven AI Engineering Intern for Summer 2027 within the AIS team. You’ll design and build GenAI applications, work with engineers and data scientists, and contribute to production-ready AI solutions.

This in-person role is based in New York or San Francisco and emphasizes mentorship, real project work, and increasing responsibility over a 10-week program. You’ll gain hands-on exposure to the full AI development lifecycle, from prototyping to deployment, while

Qualifications

• 0–2+ years AI/ML engineering experience or equivalent through internships or projects.
• Pursuing or completed bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD in CS/ML/AI/Data Science or related field.
• Strong academic performance and project experience.
• Proficiency in Python and building APIs or services.
• Experience building multi-stack GenAI programs from conception to production.
• Exposure to retrieval/search systems and vector/hybrid retrieval.
• Exposure to agentic patterns: context management, orchestration, tooling.
• Strong engineering practices: testing, code review, CI/CD, performance profiling.
• Excellent communication and interest in client-facing AI work.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop GenAI applications and agentic solutions for Bain’s clients.
• Implement AI pipelines: RAG, fine-tuning, embeddings, and hybrid retrieval.
• Build tooling: function calling and orchestration across AI workflows.
• Develop agent capabilities: memory/state handling, orchestration, tool integration.
• Support model experiments, evaluation design, and deployment tasks with senior staff.
• Write clean, testable code and contribute to APIs and services through SDLC.
• Contribute to evaluation, observability: regression tests and prompt iteration loops.
• Follow Responsible AI standards: guardrails and HITL workflows.
• Develop reusable components applicable across client contexts.
• End-to-end ML work: data prep, feature engineering, model training, validation.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, and data science teams; communicate clearly.
• Support client discussions and document outcomes as part of engagement teams.
