Internship Exploring General Business & Beyond
About this role

A GED credential opens doors that were once closed. As a GED Instructor at C&J Migrants, you’ll help adult learners from migrant communities achieve one of the most transformative milestones of their academic lives. You’ll bring content expertise, encouragement, and cultural sensitivity to a classroom where every lesson carries real-life weight — and where your investment in students pays dividends far beyond the test.

This role is for a GED Prep course, meeting 2 hours per week for 20 weeks.

Role type: Intern or hire Setting: In-person Locations: Laurel, MD and Hyattsville, MD Schedule: 2 hours/week, 20-week course Compensation: $1,500 flat rate per school Reports to: Dir. of Education

Bilingual candidates required

Fluency in French or Spanish — in addition to English — is mandatory for this role. Bilingual instructors are uniquely positioned to clarify complex academic concepts and build the learner confidence that drives GED success.

Requirements
  • Own transportation required — instructor must be able to reliably travel to course locations in Laurel and Hyattsville
  • Bilingual proficiency in French or Spanish (mandatory)
What you’ll do
  • Teach GED prep coursework across subject areas including math, science, social studies, and reasoning through language arts (RLA)
  • Administer practice assessments and use data to identify gaps and guide individualized study plans
  • Develop and adapt instructional materials that are accessible, relevant, and culturally responsive
  • Build a motivating, structured classroom environment that keeps adult learners engaged and on track
  • Track learner progress, maintain records, and communicate milestones to the Director of Education
  • Connect students to additional support resources — tutoring, testing registration, and wraparound services
What we’re looking for
  • Strong academic foundation in one or more GED subject areas (math, science, humanities, or writing)
  • Experience in adult education, tutoring, or community-based instruction
  • Bilingual proficiency in French or Spanish (mandatory)
  • Reliable, personal transportation to travel to course locations in Laurel and Hyattsville
  • Empathetic and encouraging teaching style — many GED learners carry past academic trauma
  • Ability to break down complex concepts for diverse literacy and numeracy levels
  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed a degree in Education, a STEM field, Social Sciences, or a related discipline
Why you’ll love this role
  • Few teaching experiences match watching a student pass their GED — you’ll be part of that story
  • Gain hands‑on curriculum design and assessment experience in a high-need, high-reward setting
  • Work within a respected organization with deep roots in the migrant community
  • Direct mentorship from education and nonprofit leadership invested in your growth
  • Pathway to paid employment as programming funding grows
