Job summary

Purdue University is seeking a part-time Grounds Worker to support Gabis Facilities. The role covers 20-hour weeks year-round with Monday–Friday workdays and occasional weekends. Duties include grounds maintenance, event support, and custodial tasks at the Arboretum, with safety adherence and volunteer engagement.

Qualifications include a High School Diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience. Knowledge of mowing, tool operation, and basic mechanical tasks is preferred.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED required.
• Minimum 6 months related experience or training; equivalent combination may be considered.
• Experience operating mowing and hand/power tools preferred.
• Basic mechanical knowledge preferred (oil, fuel, engine issues).
• Snow removal experience preferred.
• Knowledge of trees and weeds preferred.

Responsibilities

• Maintain trails, roads, paths, and outdoor areas.
• Mow, trim, reseed, rake, and edge lawns.
• Assist in garden beds: mulching and litter removal.
• Prune shrubs and trees as needed.
• Assist volunteers and foster engagement at the Arboretum.
• Repair fencing, tables, benches, gates, walls, and walks.
• Perform custodial duties: restrooms, lobbies, offices.
• Operate equipment safely and assist in maintenance.
• Snow removal and salt application in winter.
• Assist in events setup/breakdown and rentals.

Job Summary

The position hours are 20-hour weeks, year-round. Workdays are Monday-Friday, with some weekends required.

Grounds and Facilities

• Maintaintrails, roads, paths, and other outdoor areas of the property.
• Performs lawn care such as mowing, trimming, reseeding, raking, and edging.
• Assists in maintaining garden beds by supporting gardening staff, mulching, removing litter, etc.
• Assists in pruning shrubs and trees as needed.
• Assists volunteers while fostering positive relationships and encouraging volunteer engagement at the Arboretum.
• Repairs fencing, picnic tables, benches, gates, walls, and walks as needed.
• Performs custodial functions of Gabis Facilities such as cleaning restrooms, lobbies, offices, etc.
• Adheres to all safety regulations while operating equipment.
• Assists in the maintenance of equipment as needed.
• Snow removal and salt application during the winter.
• Other duties as assigned.

Event Support

• Performs on-site event set up, break down, and cleaning.
• Assists with events and facility rentals as needed

Education

• High School Diploma/GED

Experience

• Minimum of 6 months related experience and/or training; equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
• Experience operating various equipment such as mowers, hand and power tools is preferred. The ability to identify some trees and weeds is preferred.
• Some basic mechanical knowledge is preferred, such as checking oil, checking and filling equipment with correct fuel, and recognizing engine issues or failures.
• Previous knowledge or experience in snow removal, either manual or mechanical equipment based.
