Job summary

Type One Energy Group is seeking a Mechanical Tooling Engineer in Knoxville, TN. This hands-on role focuses on designing, developing, and implementing complex tooling and fixtures for fusion energy programs, including fabrication, assembly, and maintenance of high‑precision components.

The ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s or Master’s in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering and 5+ years in tooling or mechanical design, with experience in automation or remote systems being a plus.

Qualifications

• Hands-on engineer with practical tooling development experience.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering or related field.
• 5+ years of experience in mechanical design, manufacturing process development, or tooling engineering.
• Experience with tooling design for remote or automated operations is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Support the design and integration of mechanical tooling, fixtures, and tooling systems for assembly, maintenance and inspection.
• Design and qualify remote or automated systems for constrained/high-radiological environments.
• Review and validate designs for manufacturability and technical excellence.
• Support FMEA, DFMA, and risk assessments for critical hardware and assemblies.
• Collaborate with suppliers and internal teams for fabrication, assembly and qualification of mechanical systems.
• Develop and execute test plans to validate tool performance and repeatability.
• Create engineering drawings, procedures, and specifications per quality and safety standards.
• Contribute to process development documentation and design reviews.
