Job summary

Toyota Research Institute in the San Francisco Bay Area — with remote work possible — seeks an experienced fund accounting manager to oversee accurate financial reporting, fund operations, and compliance for venture-capital-style funds. Qualifications

  • 7+ years of professional accounting experience, ideally with 4+ years in VC/fund accounting.
  • Advanced proficiency in Google Workspace and Excel, including building and auditing financial models.
  • Experience with fund accounting platforms (Carta, Investran, eFront) is preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or related field; CPA desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Execute end-to-end capital calls and distributions, including notices and data verification.
  • Month-end close: reconcile bank accounts and prepare journal entries.
  • Reconcile portfolio data against cap tables, valuation records, and GL; maintain Statement of Investments.
  • Maintain fund accounting systems and data integrity across internal systems.
  • Build and audit waterfall models for distributions, carried interest, and hurdles.
  • Coordinate with external tax preparers and review tax returns for completeness.
  • Prepare reporting files for Limited Partners and parent entities.
  • Draft responses to investor inquiries regarding fund statements, contributions, distributions and tax documentation (K-1s).

Our firm is growing, and we are looking for an experienced fund accounting manager to join us on this journey. The role will report to the controller and will be responsible for ensuring accurate financing reporting, compliance with accounting stands, and the smooth operation of fund accounting processes.

This is a critical, execution-focused role and hands-on role for a practitioner who prefers to be deeply involved in the operational and financial accounting aspects of the fund management. It requires strong technical accounting skills, an understanding of VC fund structures, and the ability to work closely with senior leadership, investors, and portfolio companies.

Responsibilities
  • Fund Operations and Cash Management: Execute end-to-end capital calls and distributions (including calculations, notices, and data verification. Prepare fund-of-fund (FoF) wires, assist with portfolio investment wires, and process invoices as needed.
  • Month-End close: Reconcile bank accounts, prepare FoF monthly/quarterly closing entries, and other journal entries as needed.
  • Portfolio and Investment Accounting: Reconcile portfolio company financial data against internal/external cap tables, valuation records, and the general ledger. Maintain complete and accurate Statement of Investments, including cost, ownership, investment activity, realized and unrealized gains and losses, and other relevant investment data. .
  • Systems & Data Integrity: Maintain fund accounting software and related systems to ensure the completeness, accuracy, and consistency of fund and portfolio data across internal systems.
  • Financial Modeling: Build, maintain, and audit complex American and European waterfall models used for fund distributions, carried interest calculations, and hurdle rates.
  • Tax: Manage data rooms, coordinate with external tax preparers and prepare the necessary documentation. Review tax returns for completeness and reasonableness and respond to inquiries of the tax preparer and other stakeholders.
  • Reporting: Prepare reporting files for the Limited Partners and parent company entities.
  • Investor Relations: Prepare responses to inquiries from Limited Partners as needed, including drafting technical responses to complex questions regarding fund statements, contributions, distributions and tax documentation (K-1s).
Qualifications
  • Experience: 7+ years of professional accounting experience, ideally with 4 years or more of direct experience in fund accounting at a VC firm, private equity manager, or alternative investment firm.
  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced expertise in Google Workspace and Excel is required, including the ability to build, debug, and audit complex financial models. Proficiency with industry-standard fund accounting platforms (e.g., Carta, Investran, eFront, or similar) is preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. A CPA is highly desirable.
  • Operational Precision: Proven track record of executing complex administrative and financial workflows with a high degree of comfort and competence in managing the granular details of fund operations.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to explain complex tax, financial, and legal concepts effectively to diverse stakeholders.
  • Professional Presence: High degree of integrity and discretion, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively within a fast-paced investment environment. Strong individual contributor, as well as a team player

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $150,000 and $170,000/year for California-based roles. Base pay offered will depend on multiple individualized factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's experience, skills, job-related knowledge, and market location.
