Job description

Position Title: Security Officer (Full Time)

Summary: Under direct supervision of the Security Manager and the School Director to patrol school buildings to ensure a safe and secure building environment, as well as the personal safety of students, staff, and visitors.

Qualifications:

  1. Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
  2. High School Diploma and completion of sufficient education to successfully perform the duties of the position.
  3. Successful experience in security, law enforcement, or military preferred.
  4. NJ SORA Certification required.
  5. Maintain CPR/AED certification.
  6. Experience working with adolescents is preferred.

Prior to employment, the following must be addressed:

  1. Required to complete a criminal history background check to prove that the individual has not been convicted of a crime or a disorderly person’s offense in accordance with N.J.S.A 18A:6-7.1.
  2. Provide evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities with reasonable accommodation pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 12101 and in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6A:32-6.2.
  3. Pass the state-required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test as required by N.J.A.C. 6A:32-6.3.
  4. Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
  5. Understand the requirement to maintain confidentiality concerning charter school related matters.
  6. Meet such alternatives to the above qualifications as the school director finds appropriate and acceptable.

Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

Essential Performance Responsibilities: (The following description is illustrative of tasks and responsibilities. It is not meant to be all inclusive of every task or responsibility.)

  1. Provides for the safety and security of students, staff, visitors and School District property in accordance with School District policies to provide an educational climate which is conducive to learning.
  2. Conducts ongoing security patrols of the building.
  3. Enforces Board policies regarding smoking, parking, loitering, trespassing, theft, vandalism, property damage, alcohol, drug abuse, and other school rules and regulations.
  4. Reports concerns and incidents that may require corrective action to Security Coordinator, Security Manager, School Director, and/or emergency services.
  5. Encourages appropriate student conduct with regard to school rules and regulations.
  6. Assists visitors to the school in receiving proper direction, assists in maintaining log of all visitors, and prevents unauthorized persons from entering the building.
  7. Monitors exits and prevents unauthorized exits of the building by students.
  8. Assists school administrators with investigations as assigned.
  9. Deescalates students involved in altercations and maintains crowd control as needed in accordance with established guidelines regarding the use of force.
  10. Monitors grounds at dropoff/dismissal to prevent loitering and improper parking of vehicles.
  11. Monitors surveillance and access control systems.
  12. Identify and respond to emergencies as per policy and security manual.
  13. Perform any other duties within the scope of his/her employment and certification that may be assigned.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of best practices in building security and safety.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and codes related to building safety and security, including OSHA, and Electronic Surveillance laws.
  • Knowledge of security and alarm systems, electronic surveillance, and related safety and security devices.
  • Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with principal, security guards and others.
  • Ability to describe orally or in writing, security problems as needed.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to maintain a professional, calm and authoritative manner when challenged by students.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:

  1. Occasional work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  2. Ability to de-escalate and separate students or others involved in altercations.
  3. Works in standard office and school building environments.

Equipment:

  1. Uses radio communications equipment.
  2. Uses computers to create reports, monitor surveillance cameras, and utilize access control system.
