Job summary

The City of Deming is seeking qualified applicants for a regular, full-time Community Planner I. The role involves liaison work between the Planning and Zoning bodies, City Council, and zoning authorities, with potential GIS mapping and population analysis for utilities and street projects.

You will assist in drafting ordinances, conduct feasibility studies, and prepare planning reports, while providing support to code enforcement and building inspectors.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in urban planning, public administration, or closely related field; and 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Excellent communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
• Must hold a valid NM Driver’s License; able to manage deadlines, maintain confidentiality, and adapt in high-pressure situations.

Responsibilities

• Liaison between Planning and Zoning Commission, Extra Territorial Zoning Commission, City Council, and ETC Zoning Authority.
• Duties may include GIS mapping and population analysis for utilities and street projects, property acquisitions.
• Assist in drafting ordinances, conduct feasibility studies, and prepare various planning reports.
• Provide administrative support to code enforcement and building inspector functions.
• Provide professional planning advice to supervisors, boards, commissions, and the public.
• Assist in preparing hearing notifications, zoning applications, and related public information notices.

The City of Deming is seeking qualified applicants for regular, full time Community Planner I.

Position requires a valid State of New Mexico driver's license and good driving record; previous

department-related work experience is preferred. Salary negotiable based on education and

experience.

This position includes liaison and technical assistance duties between the Planning and Zoning

Commission, the Extra Territorial Zoning Commission, the City Council and the Extra Territorial Zoning

Authority. Duties may include GIS mapping and population for utilities and street, property acquisition

assignments, assisting in the drafting of ordinances, conduction feasibility studies and a variety of reports

related to planning function. Position provides administrative support to code enforcement and building

inspector functions. Position provides professional planning and development advice to supervisors,

boards, commissions, civic groups and the general public. Position assists in the preparation of public

hearing notifications, zoning applications and notifications or related public information notices. Other

duties may be assigned.
