SUMMARY
This is routine clerical work in a library involving basic support services and services to patrons.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Works under the direct supervision of the Branch Manager.
- Advises and assists library patrons in checking out materials and registering library cards, answering questions related to the patron’s library accounts in person, over the phone, or via email, if required. Receives and processes payments from library patrons for charges or other fees.
- Charges books, DVDs, magazines, and other library holdings in and out at the circulation desk and collects fines and fees using an automated circulation system. Inspects incoming library materials for damage and makes recommendation to Branch Manager in the case of repair or disposal.
- Shelves and maintains library materials according to the proper classification system.
- Receives or collects returned library materials; picks up and/or unloads materials from book return bins.
- Assists in assuring accurate library shelving by shelf-reading and reshelving of materials, as needed. Straightens shelves, tables, and library in general, picking up library materials used in-house for re-shelving.
- Assists library patrons in finding library materials and information using the card catalog, databases, and other resources. Assists library patrons with the public computers or other library equipment that is available for public use.
- Unloads bi-weekly delivery tubs and properly routes items for check-in or other handling.
- Carries out interlibrary loan procedures for incoming and outgoing library materials.
- Performs routine library computer functions.
- Operates a variety of standard office and library machines. Answers telephones and provides routine information or refers and transfers calls.
- Enforces library policies and procedures in a tactful and respectful manner to ensure the safety and integrity of materials, customers, and staff members.
- Assists with library program preparation and implementation, as directed by the branch manager and/or programming staff.
- Light housekeeping duties, as required to keep the library tidy and hygienic.
- Performs other work as needed or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Good knowledge of library procedures and practices. Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System.
- Good knowledge of clerical procedures and systems: word processing, filing, records management, number facility for the purposes of filing and counting.
- Good knowledge of computers and software applications, including but not limited to word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, database and email.
- Good knowledge of the English language.
- Good skill in typing and the ability to do data entry using a computer terminal.
- Good ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Considerable ability to pay attention to detail in working with numbers, words, documents, and ideas.
- Considerate ability to accurately, neatly, and efficiently complete tasks and processes, such as applying labels, proofreading, sorting, shelving, and reading shelves.
- Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, associates and the general public.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS
Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee will frequently sit, stand and walk.
- The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, and reach forward and above the head. They must be able to move freely around in the library and retrieve books and materials from the ground level shelf as well as the higher shelves. Walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting are required actions.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.
- The employee will frequently push book carts up to 300 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision to see details of objects that are less than a few feet away.
- Must be able to work productively and tolerantly in an environment with occasional lengthy periods of noise from programs.
