Reading Community Schools is posting the following position for the 2026/2027 School Year:
Position: Maintenance/Custodian (Full-Time) 8 Hours Per Day, Year-Round Position (261 Days)
Reports to: Maintenance and Facilities Supervisor
Primary Purpose
The School Maintenance/Custodian plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming educational environment for students, staff, and visitors. Under the supervision of the Building & Grounds Supervisor, the Ground Maintenance Worker performs all ground maintenance for the district, including but not limited to mowing and snow removal during snowfall, and operating and maintaining district lawn and snow equipment. This position executes routine and specialized custodial care, minor facility maintenance, and operational support. The ideal candidate is reliable and collaborative, takes pride in campus aesthetics, prioritizes safety regulations, and is flexible enough to assist with food service operations as needed.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Clear Criminal History Check.
- Hold a valid driver’s license.
- Maintain communication with the supervisor.
- Report all accidents, needed supplies, and broken equipment immediately.
- Operate lawn mowers, zero-turn mowers, edgers, leaf blowers, and hedge trimmers.
- Maintain grass-cutting equipment; sharpen mower blades; change oil and hydraulic fluids.
- Conduct ice and snow removal from sidewalks, building fronts, and parking lots.
- Maintain snow removal equipment, trucks, plows, salt spreaders, and snow blowers.
- Salt parking lots, drives, sidewalks, and building fronts.
- Keep careful control over all tools and custodial equipment.
- Perform grounds upkeep: pick up litter, remove leaves/brush, and clean up after storms.
- Inspect grounds for hazards; address or report safety issues (holes, broken branches, uneven surfaces).
- Follow all safety protocols: use PPE, operate equipment safely, and manage traffic/pedestrian controls.
- Support event and facility needs: set up/take down outdoor furniture, signage, and temporary barriers.
- Maintain records: work logs, chemical applications, equipment maintenance, and incident reports.
- Collaborate with team members and supervisors to prioritize tasks and meet service standards.
- Communicate professionally with staff, students, and visitors; respond to work orders promptly.
- Adhere to environmental and regulatory requirements.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support safe, clean, and functional grounds.
- Sweep, mop, and scrub floors and other surfaces.
- Clean, renovate, and renew floor surface finishes.
- Safely manages and sanitizes student biohazard spills, including blood, vomit, and other bodily fluids, ensuring compliance with health department guidelines.
- Cleans and dusts furniture, exhibit cases, fixtures, windows, doors, trim, and related furnishings.
- Moves furniture, supplies, and miscellaneous equipment, including folding up cafeteria tables.
- Sweeps or shovels snow from steps, roofs, and walkways at building entrances, and salts icy steps and walkways as needed.
- Collects, bags, and disposes of trash.
- Locks/unlocks doors and windows to classrooms and offices.
- Turns off unnecessary lighting.
- Cleans and services lavatories, toilet rooms, and locker rooms.
- Washes all interior and exterior glass, including framed pictures, partitions, and doors.
- Reports items that require repair.
- Performs interior surface maintenance, including painting, priming, and wall preparation for classrooms and common areas.
- Maintains and operates all equipment necessary to perform assigned tasks.
- Vacuums and spot-cleans carpet and flooring as necessary.
- Performs all custodial/maintenance duties assigned by supervisor(s).
- Must be self-motivated.
- Ability to work alone and troubleshoot plumbing and electrical issues.
- Walking and/or standing for extended periods of time.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of the job.
Minimum Qualifications
To be considered, candidates must meet one of the following:
- High school diploma or GED required; college or trade school classes preferred.
- Possess good habits, character, and attendance records.
- Be neat in appearance.
- Be able to speak, read, and write at a level of proficiency that permits satisfactory job performance.
- Be capable of and demonstrate the establishment and maintenance of harmonious, effective relationships with staff, supervisors, and co-workers.
- Upon request, present a certificate signed by a licensed physician appointed by the school board verifying the physical ability to perform the job.
- Custodial and maintenance experience to carry out assigned duties is preferred.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Possess a willingness to learn new job skills.
Preferred:
- Previous maintenance and custodial experience preferred.
- Salary: Hourly rate of $18.45 per hour. Benefits: single-subscriber insurance, paid holidays, retirement through MPSERS, and paid leave time.
