Job summary

The Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking a Maintenance Worker to help conserve and maintain Service lands and facilities. This intermediate-level position carries out a broad range of maintenance, rehabilitation, and construction tasks essential to care for properties and equipment.

You will follow sketches and work orders, use basic blueprints, operate trucks, snow plows, and various tools, and collaborate with a team to meet deadlines.

Qualifications

  • Experience performing intermediate maintenance and construction tasks.
  • Ability to read basic blueprints and work orders.

Responsibilities

  • Implementing instructions from supervisor and working independent of others.
  • Provide status updates on in-progress work and inform supervisor of needs.
  • Answer workers questions and obtain needed information.
  • Care for common power and hand tools and work with trades materials (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting).
  • Operate trucks with snow plows and spreader boxes; install and remove as needed.
  • Operate front-end loaders, skid steers, and excavators to handle materials.
  • Operate 1- and 2-ton trucks and dump trucks.

The Fish and Wildlife Service is dedicated to conserving, protecting, and enhancing fish, wildlife, and their habitats so future generations can continue to enjoy them.

This position supports that mission by carrying out a wide range of intermediate-level construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance activities essential to the care and operation of Service lands and facilities.

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a one year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider:

  • your performance and conduct;
  • the needs and interests of the agency;

  • Implementing instructions from supervisor and working independent of others.
  • Provides status of in-process work assignments and informs supervisor on needs required to complete work and meet deadlines.
  • Answers workers questions and obtained needed information.
  • Cares for common power and hand tools as well as work with the materials associated with the trades (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting); Utilizes knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts(electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting).
  • Works from sketches, work orders, basic blueprints, and instructions, which are complete in terms of type of job required and materials and methods to be used.
  • Operates trucks equipped with snow plows and spreader boxers, including the ability to install and remove independently.
  • Operates multi-lever controlled equipment such as front-end loaders, skid steers, and excavators to manipulate and load materials.
  • Operates 1 and 2 Ton Trucks & Dump Trucks equipped with and without trailered loads.
