Job summary

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic to support operation, maintenance, and repair of water diversion and delivery systems at a field location near Hamer, Idaho.

The role encompasses multi-trade work including building repairs, road maintenance, and weed control in Refuge areas. Responsibilities involve repairing vehicles and heavy equipment, reading blueprints, and performing safety-sensitive tasks while adhering to Federal guidelines.

Duties

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:

• Provides support in the areas of operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of the large and complex water diversion and delivery systems.
• Performs repairs, preventative maintenance, operational checks, and troubleshooting problems with vehicles, heavy equipment and ATV/UTVs.
• Constructs, alters, modifies or repairs a wide range of features in buildings, quarters and other facilities. This can include carpentry, electrical, and/or plumbing repairs.
• Maintains Refuge roads that include grading and snow and ice removal during adverse conditions.
• Sprays weeds in Refuge administration areas such as parking lots.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

Resumes must demonstrate experience, education, and/or training, that you possess the ability to perform as a Maintenance Mechanic, WG-4749-09 duties. Examples of work may include: Performing maintenance, repair, construction, and troubleshooting duties across multiple trades. Maintaining and repairing vehicles, heavy equipment, and small engines; operating heavy equipment for earth-moving and land management work; and safely using hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments. Reading and applying blueprints and technical instructions, completing preventive maintenance, maintaining tools and equipment, following safety procedures, documenting maintenance actions, and carrying out projects. Failure to meet this screen-out element will result in an ineligible rating.

This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement, the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. The defined vicinity for this position is: within 50 miles of Hamer, Idaho. Physical Demands:

Considerable physical effort is required in the operation and maintenance of facilities, equipment, and attachments. Work may occur in small confined spaces or elevated areas, and operating equipment over rough surfaces. Location of the tools and controls/attachments frequently requires working in awkward or strained positions. Requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50-100 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.

Working Conditions:

Work is accomplished both in an office setting (5%) and outdoors (95%). Works outside in all kinds of weather and frequently exposed to running water, fumes, dust, grease, dirt, falling from ladders or scaffolding, electricity, and moving parts of equipment and machinery. Work performed outside is in a variety of settings where steep terrain, extremely uneven, rocky and slippery footing is normal. Temperature extremes are common. Incumbent may also be exposed to energized circuits, electrical shock, burns, electrical rotary devices, cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and burns from chemicals. Work is regularly exposed to the possibility of bites, cuts, scrapes, bruises, falls, falling material, or injury from equipment associated with power equipment or hazardous materials. Work demands conformance to safety requirements including the use of a variety of personal protective equipment in adherence to applicable laws, rules, and regulations, such as: protective clothing, hardhats, hearing protection, safety glasses, goggles, gloves, steel toe heavy leather boots, respirator, and other personal protective items.
