Job summary

The US Army Corps of Engineers is seeking a Maintenance Worker to perform a variety of maintenance, repair and operational duties at a park office assigned in New Mexico. You will inspect electrical components, weld components, construct or modify structures, and maintain water control systems, while operating vehicles and vessels as needed.

Duties

• Perform a variety of maintenance, repair and operational duties for the park office to which assigned.
• Apply a variety of standardized methods, procedures and techniques to maintain and repair equipment.
• Inspect circuit breakers and fuses for proper condition and size, replacing defective breakers.
• Weld similar metal components together to fabricate or repair equipment.
• Construct, install, repair or modify items and structures.
• Repair, replace and maintain such things as pipe, tile, union joints, faucets and drains.
• Dam operation: Collect humidity, temperature and wind velocity readings from weather instruments. Make gate settings to regulate outflow of water. Perform routine maintenance and repair.
• Operate a variety of vehicles and vessels.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• The incumbent must possession or have the ability acquire the following licenses: a state driver's license; a Corps of Engineers boat operator's license; and a forklift operator's license
• The incumbent may need to work nights and/or weekends.
• The incumbent is required to work in adverse weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.)
• The incumbent may be required to have a valid CPR certificate and first responder (or equivalent) certificate.
• The incumbent may be required to obtain a water treatment plant, Class I or II, operator's license.
• The incumbent may be required to work in both non-permit and permit required confined space and implement proper rescue and entry techniques.
• The incumbent may be required to be properly trained and/or operate the following equipment: Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBAs), escape packs, atmospheric monitoring devices and fall protection equipment.
• The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter.
• This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
• The incumbent will be required to wear prescribed uniform as identified in regulation ER 1130-2-550, dated 15 November 1996.

Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker ~ without more than normal supervision. I have performed common maintenance and repair tasks on mechanical equipment, utility systems, buildings, and/or other appurtenant structures and property under the normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level maintenance worker. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element) WG-08

Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker ~ without more than normal supervision. I have experience as a maintenance worker performing common dam operation, maintenance inspection and repair work on a continuing basis on mechanical equipment, utility systems, buildings, and/or other appurtenant structures and property at park and flood control dam facilities under the normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level maintenance worker who observes tasks in progress to ensure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort

• Uses moderate physical effort to stack, load, unload, move and carry tools, equipment and materials ranging in weight from 10 pounds to 50 pounds unassisted. Occasionally lifts heavier objects with assistance (e.g., using a hand truck). Required to reach, walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Occasionally works in cramped quarters, or from ladders, scaffolds or platforms.

Working Conditions

• Work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, etc.) and usually in a dirty, dusty and/or greasy environment. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of broken bones, electrical shocks, burns, cuts bruises, maimed fingers and scrapes. Occasionally is required to wear uncomfortable protective clothing.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
