Job summary

Job description

The mission of the fire and rescue training program is to provide quality training and education opportunities to all levels of fire and rescue personnel in the county. Our purpose is to develop and deliver a wide variety of complex technical, managerial, and developmental training programs for fire and rescue personnel.

*This position is a 12-month exempt staff position. Position will remain open until filled*
  • Develop and supervise courses in the Fire Rescue Program areas.
  • Supervise and evaluate all Fire and Rescue part time instructors and contractors.
  • Evaluate Programs by conducting class visits at training sites.
  • Ensure program accreditation and reaccreditation for OSFM fire and rescue commission.
  • Develop and maintain Facility Agreements with applicable agencies
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with all community entities.
  • Manage and schedule facilities, equipment, supplies and resources with appropriate inventory control.
  • Study community needs to guide organization and development of new courses and formats.
  • Promote courses and disseminate information in the community.
  • Arrange, schedule and maintain training criteria for numerous agencies within NC.
  • Coordinate course schedules for on and off campus classes.
  • Select, supervise and evaluate qualified part-time instructors and contractors where necessary.
  • Assess instructor needs/concerns.
  • Evaluate student concerns and address any issues that may arise in the classroom/clinical setting.
  • Ensure the currency of education books and materials as approved through credentialing agency.
  • Register classes and submit registration materials and fees in timely manner.
  • Monitor payroll and contracts for all qualified course instructors and submit with instructor’s signature.
  • Be responsible for all course completion reports, attendance rosters, and applicable reports to State agencies and local agencies
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of service requirements, new tactics and techniques, policies and procedures, training requirements and regulations for Fire Rescue program areas to ensure that all training conforms to State and Federal protocol.
  • Occasionally serve as primary, secondary and/or test proctor instructor in courses.
  • Maintain up-to-date and current personnel files for instructors and assist in certifications.
  • Coordinate educational programs outcomes/performance evaluation based on institutional success factors.
  • Monitor and ensure student compliance with State agencies (OSFM, OEMS, OSHA, etc.).
  • Manage program evaluations.
  • Collaborate to ensure consistent program delivery and multi-agency programming between other public safety coordinators.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Attend meetings, conferences, and other sessions related to essential functions.
  • Create a student-centered environment for on and off campus students
  • Work toward operational excellence; continuous improvement of processes and seek help from advisory committees
  • Implement innovative strategies to meet the needs of students and improve processes
  • Interact with co-workers and perform tasks with the highest level of integrity
  • Work cooperatively with faculty, staff, students, and our learning community
  • Promote and support HCC’s mission, vision, and values and promote and support coworkers in the most positive manner.
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum
  • Firefighter Level I and II
  • Fire Instructor I
  • 3 years teaching experience at a community college or as a training officer at an NC fire department
Preferred
  • Associate’s degree in Fire Science or Public Administration
  • Five years of experience at an Officer level in an NC fire department
  • Fire Instructor II or working towards Fire Instructor II
