Job summary

Black Hills Special Services Cooperative (BHSSC) seeks a Frontline Supervisor to lead Direct Support Professionals and ensure safe, high-quality, person-centered services in Hot Springs, SD. This hands-on role combines supervision with participant support, community inclusion, and service coordination.

The Supervisor will build strong relationships with staff, participants, families, and teams while promoting independence and a positive work culture.

Qualifications

• Two years' experience working with people with disabilities.
• Demonstrated competency in person-centered direct support services.
• Valid Driver's License.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
• Supervisory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and develop DSPs with day-to-day leadership, coaching, mentoring, feedback, and performance support.
• Coordinate onboarding and training for new DSPs, including orientation and ongoing development.
• Build and support effective teams, promoting communication and accountability.
• Develop person-centered service plans and ensure DSP training.
• Advocate for participant choice, independence, and outcomes.
• Provide direct support services promoting independence and community participation.
• Promote health, safety, and respond to emergencies.
• Monitor quality and regulatory compliance; participate in audits and licensing reviews.
• Coordinate staffing, schedules, and documentation; use EHR systems.
• Serve as a liaison between DSPs, participants, families, leadership, and partners.

This hands‑on role combines staff supervision and development with participant support, person-centered planning, community inclusion, and service coordination. The Frontline Supervisor will build strong relationships with staff, participants, families, and team members while promoting independence, accountability, and a positive team culture. This is an opportunity for an experienced direct support professional or emerging leader to make a meaningful impact on both the people served and the team supporting them.

Job Description

• Supervise and develop DSPs by providing day-to-day leadership, coaching, mentoring, feedback, competency validation, and performance support.
• Coordinate onboarding and training for new DSPs, including orientation, on-the-job training, peer coaching, and ongoing professional development.
• Build and support effective teams by promoting communication, collaboration, accountability, conflict resolution, and a positive workplace culture.
• Develop and support person-centered service plans based on participants' goals, strengths, preferences, and support needs, and ensure DSPs have the training and resources needed to implement those plans.
• Build relationships with participants, families, guardians, and interdisciplinary teams while advocating for participant choice, independence, self-determination, and desired outcomes.
• Provide and oversee direct support services that promote independence, daily living skills, community participation, employment, recreation, education, relationships, and other activities chosen by participants.
• Promote participant health, wellness, rights, and safety, including monitoring health concerns, supporting medication and treatment processes, responding to emergencies, and addressing suspected abuse, neglect, exploitation, or rights violations.
• Monitor service quality and regulatory compliance through staff observation, documentation review, participant and family feedback, quality improvement activities, and participation in audits, investigations, and licensing or accreditation reviews.
• Coordinate staffing and operational needs, including employee schedules, leave requests, on-call coverage, attendance records, required documentation, and use of electronic health records and other organizational systems.
• Respond to staff and participant needs and serve as a communication link between DSPs, participants, families, leadership, and community partners, including providing support during emergencies, crises, and on-call situations.
• Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required. BA or BS in Psychology, Sociology, Human Services, Special Education, or a related field is preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• A minimum of two years' experience working with people with disabilities preferred and have achieved the competency of at least a DSP. Supervisory experience preferred.
• Demonstrated competency in providing person-centered direct support services.
• Previous experience coaching, mentoring, leading teams, or supervising employees is preferred.
• Valid Driver's License
• Ability to lift 50 lbs
