Job summary

Buchanan Community Schools is seeking a Freshman Men’s Basketball Coach to lead the high school athletics program for the 2026-27 season. The coach will develop players, schedule practices, supervise safety, and ensure adherence to eligibility criteria under district and MHSAA rules.

The role requires strong leadership, reliable attendance, and the ability to communicate with parents and the media to promote the program. Compensation: extracurricular/athletic pay scale, base $2,000 per season.

Qualifications

• Education and/or Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent; two years previous work experience preferred.
• Language Skills: read and interpret documents; write correspondence; speak effectively before student/parents/stakeholders; listen and respond to inquiries.
• Mathematical Skills: calculate figures and amounts; apply math concepts to practical situations.
• Reasoning Skills: solve practical problems and deal with concrete variables; use logic and reasoning to interpret instructions.
• Other Skills: Chromebook/Google apps literacy; able to take direction, work independently and as part of a team; calm demeanor; punctual; experience with special needs/behavioral issues preferred.

Responsibilities

• Coaches individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.
• Plans and schedules a regular program of practice in season.
• Oversees safety conditions of the facility during activity.
• Maintains accurate statistics, records, and results of the season.
• Enforces discipline and sportsmanship; enforces penalties for breaches.
• Maintains knowledge of rules and procedures; ensures eligibility criteria per district and interscholastic rules.
• Injury prevention and follow-up; collaborates with athletic coordinator on scheduling contests.
• Recommends equipment, supplies, and uniforms; maintains attendance forms and insurance records.
• Develops a positive communications approach to inform parents and public about the program.
• Develops a quality program and helps younger players develop skills and attitudes.
• Maintains regular attendance; performs additional duties as assigned; adheres to district policies.
