Job summary

Norfolk Southern Corp. in Birmingham, Alabama, is seeking a Train Conductor to safely move freight trains, build and inspect trains, and manage documentation. No prior railroad experience is required—the company provides all the training you need to succeed.

You must be available on-call 24/7 with as little as 90 minutes’ notice, and you will work 2–3 days away from home each week. Training lasts about 20 weeks, with the first five weeks at the NS Training Center in McDonough, GA, including

Qualifications

• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• Legally authorized to work in the U.S.
• Able to pass FRA drug and alcohol screening.
• Willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Strong safety awareness and ability to follow procedures.
• Must be able to report to work within 90 minutes and be away 2–3 days weekly.

Responsibilities

• Build and inspect trains, railcars, and equipment for safe operation.
• Operate remote control locomotives and perform coupling/drawbar tasks.
• Communicate effectively with crews, dispatchers, and yard controllers.
• Maintain accurate documentation and comply with FRA and company safety regulations.
• Must hold a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation.
