Job summary

Norfolk Southern is hiring a Freight Car Repairer Trainee. This hands-on, field-based program trains you to inspect, repair, and maintain railroad freight cars with safety as a priority.

Training includes classroom and on‑the‑job instruction, with lodging and travel reimbursement per union agreement. The role requires a high school diploma or GED, 18+ years, a valid driver’s license, and willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• 18 years of age or older and valid driver’s license.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair, and maintain freight cars in compliance with FRA and AAR standards.
• Ensure compliance with railroad rules and safety regulations.
• Perform welding and cutting (SMAW and FCAW) in 2F, 3F, and 4F positions.
• Operate forklifts, cranes, and car-moving equipment.
• Rerail cars and locomotives and document repair records.
