Job summary

Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell, P.C. seeks a Supervisor-level professional to serve as a fractional Controller for a portfolio of nonprofit and professional services clients.

You will provide technical accounting oversight, lead engagements, perform financial analysis, and advise clients to improve processes and decision-making. The role requires at least five years of public accounting, CAS or finance leadership experience, supervision responsibility, and strong GAAP knowledge.

Qualifications

• 5+ years accounting and finance experience, preferably within CAS or outsourced accounting
• Experience supervising staff and owning client deliverables
• Ownership mindset, proactive problem solving in a changing client-service environment
• Strong understanding of financial and internal controls in a GAAP environment
• CPA certification preferred or equivalent finance credential and experience
• Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field required
• Master's degree in finance preferred but not required
• Proficiency with accounting software (QBO, BILL, Sage Intacct, Xero, CCH Suite) and advanced Excel/Microsoft Office
• Exposure to analytics or reporting platforms is a plus
• Excellent analytical abilities with accuracy and attention to detail
• Ability to manage multiple client engagements, prioritize work, and meet deadlines
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Responsibilities

• Analyze financial results to identify trends and provide actionable recommendations
• Develop financial models for cash flow forecasting, budgeting, and planning
• Prepare and present financial reports, dashboards, and KPIs to client leadership
• Oversee accounting functions: AP/AR, payroll, GL, month-end close
• Lead engagement planning, staffing, and deadlines for multiple clients
• Collaborate with executives and boards to communicate results and recommendations
• Mentor staff and ensure quality deliverables
• Identify opportunities to improve reporting, controls, and workflows
