Job summary

Center for AI Safety (CAIS) is seeking a Founding Recruiter to build the talent function from the ground up in San Francisco, shaping recruitment across research, engineering, policy, and operations. You will own the full lifecycle, partner with leaders, and design scalable processes that reflect CAIS’s mission.

You will design sourcing strategies, build pipelines from scratch, and scale interview processes while representing CAIS’s culture to candidates across disciplines.

Qualifications

• Experience building recruiting functions at scaling orgs.
• Ability to design sourcing strategies and hiring processes from scratch.
• Proven track record closing candidates for technical roles.
• Strong prioritization across multiple open roles.
• High autonomy with ability to build foundation first.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; able to represent CAIS's mission.
• Comfort with ATS and sourcing tools (Greenhouse, LinkedIn Recruiter, or similar).

Responsibilities

• Own the full recruiting lifecycle for CAIS’s open roles: sourcing, outreach, screening, interview coordination, offer negotiation, and close.
• Build sourcing strategies and pipelines from scratch for hard-to-fill technical, research, and policy roles.
• Design and improve interview processes: rubrics, scorecards, and calibration for consistency as we scale.
• Set up recruiting infrastructure: ATS configuration, sourcing tools, and reporting to track every req.
• Partner with leadership to translate ambiguous role needs into clear job descriptions and hiring plans.
• Act as the primary point of contact for candidates, representing CAIS’s mission and culture.
• Develop CAIS’s employer brand within AI safety, technical research, and policy communities.
• Collaborate with People Operations on offer construction and onboarding handoff.
• Look for opportunities to scale recruiting workflows, including AI tools.
• Prioritize across concurrent open reqs; determine what matters most now.
