Job summary

The Center for AI Safety (CAIS) in San Francisco, CA seeks an experienced People Operations Manager to build a scalable HR function from the ground up. This is an individual-contributor role focused on designing systems, processes, and documentation to support rapid growth.

You'll own the full people-ops lifecycle, implement HRIS and payroll, establish policies, and develop compensation practices, while fostering CAIS's culture and commitment to AI safety.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to design systems from scratch.
• Experience building people operations at scaling orgs.
• Strong HR lifecycle knowledge and HRIS comfort.
• Excellent written communication.
• Ability to operate as an IC with high autonomy.

Responsibilities

• Own the full people-ops lifecycle, from hiring through offboarding.
• Set up and maintain HRIS, payroll, benefits, and compliance recordkeeping.
• Establish internal policy, handbook, leave and accommodations processes, and safety/L&D programs.
• Build performance and development framework and provide manager support.
• Develop compensation best practices in partnership with leadership.
• Act as the point person for employee relations and HR compliance questions.
• Partner across Finance, IT, and Ops to connect workflows.
• Scale and automate people-ops systems, including AI tools.
• Champion and steward CAIS culture through practices and rituals.
• Prioritize what matters now vs. what can wait for more headcount.
