Position Summary

The Florida State University College of Medicine, in partnership with Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, seeks a visionary and accomplished academic leader to serve as the Founding Program Director (PD) for the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program.

The Program Director holds authority, accountability, and operational responsibility for all aspects of the residency program, including the integration of clinical education, resident well‑being, faculty development, and strict adherence to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Institutional and Program Requirements. This position balances dedicated administrative and educational leadership with ongoing clinical practice within the high-volume, high-acuity environment of Sarasota Memorial Hospital Care System.

Required Protected Time & Support
  • Administrative Allocation: In strict compliance with ACGME requirements, the Sponsoring Institution guarantees no less than 20 hours per week (0.50 FTE) of protected, non-clinical professional effort dedicated entirely to the administrative, educational, and academic activities of the Obstetrics and Gynecology program.

Key Responsibilities & ACGME Core Mandates
1. Program Administration & Compliance
  • Maintain oversight and ultimate accountability for the operation of the residency program across all clinical environments.

  • Administer and maintain an educational environment conducive to teaching and training residents in each of the six ACGME core competency areas.

  • Ensure accurate, complete, and timely updates of all required program information in the ACGME Accreditation Data System (ADS).

  • Implement and enforce institutional and program-specific policies regarding resident selection, evaluation, promotion, discipline, grievance, and due process.

2. Curriculum & Clinical Oversight
  • Design, implement, and continuously improve a robust educational curriculum that reflects current trends and standards in OB/GYN education, including advanced surgical and simulation modalities.

  • Approve the selection, continued participation, and evaluation of all core and subspecialty program faculty at participating clinical sites.

  • Identify and collaborate with qualified Subspecialty Faculty Educators across the mandatory domains: Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM), Gynecologic Oncology, Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS), and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI).

  • Ensure rigorous monitoring of resident supervision, appropriate clinical and educational work hours (including moonlighting policies), and safe transitions of care.

3. Resident Evaluation & Tracking
  • Oversee the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) to ensure objective, milestone-based evaluations of resident progression.

  • Maintain meticulous tracking of resident operative and clinical volumes via the ACGME Case Log System, ensuring each resident comfortably achieves required procedural minimums.

  • Provide verified, documented evidence of completion and competency for all graduating residents or those transferring laterally out of the program.

4. Academic Environment & Quality Improvement
  • Lead the Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) in conducting the Annual Program Evaluation (APE) to assess curriculum, faculty performance, and program efficacy.

  • Foster a robust environment of scientific inquiry, mentoring residents in quality improvement (QI) projects, patient safety initiatives, and peer-reviewed research or scholarly activities.

Required Qualifications & Expertise
  • Education: Medical Degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution.

  • Certification: Current, active board certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) or the American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AOBOG).

  • Licensure: Eligible for or currently holding an unrestricted medical license in the State of Florida, alongside appropriate medical staff appointments at Sarasota Memorial Healthcare.

  • Clinical Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience in obstetrics and gynecology following completion of an OB/GYN residency.

  • GME Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of documented educational and/or administrative experience as an active faculty member in an ACGME-accredited obstetrics and gynecology residency program.

  • Leadership Track Record: Documented educational and/or administrative experience in an ACGME-accredited residency program (e.g., as an Associate Program Director, Core Faculty member, or Clerkship Director) is highly preferred.

  • Aptitude: Demonstrated expertise in medical education pedagogy, familiarity with modern GME residency management platforms (e.g., New Innovations, Thalamus, ERAS), and an adaptive leadership approach to managing high-performing teams in high-stress clinical environments.
