Job summary

softrun is seeking its first dedicated engineer to own the Flutter app end to end, shipping updates for both iOS and Android and ensuring crash-free releases. You will optimize mobile audio workflows, integrate a Node.js backend, and refine on-device latency and gestures while coordinating with the founder.

The role involves extending the rehearsal loop, building cue-based features, and managing API changes across the backend and app experience to deliver a polished, responsive product.

Qualifications

  • Shipped a Flutter app to both stores and maintained it across OS releases.
  • Experience with real audio on mobile: recording, formats, permissions, background modes.
  • Comfortable with a Node.js backend and API changes when needed.
  • Focus on latency, gestures, and performance on varied network conditions.
  • Able to work on codebase independently with founder-level review.

Responsibilities

  • Own the Flutter app end to end: architecture, releases, both stores, crash-free rate.
  • Make recording bulletproof under long takes, interruptions, and low storage.
  • Push delivery metrics from server-side to on-device and live during use.
  • Build the rehearsal loop with cue cards and next-take flow on mobile.
  • Work the API and Express backend; update both sides as the app evolves.
  • Handle store plumbing: subscriptions, sign-in, deep links for iOS/Android.

Job description

Full-time · Remote · Australia or California · US$140k a year

Nobody rehearses a speech at a desk. They do it pacing the kitchen, in the car, in ahotel room the night before. The softrun iPhone and Android app is where thathappens: record a take, get the transcript and the delivery measurements, run itpast the audience, fix the line, go again. The app exists and ships. You will ownit, and you will be the first engineer on it who is not the founder.

What you will do
  • Own the Flutter app end to end: architecture, releases, both stores, crash-free rate.
  • Make recording bulletproof. Long takes, interruptions, phone calls, low storage, background audio. A lost take is the worst thing the app can do.
  • Bring delivery metrics closer to the device. Pace, pauses and energy are measured server-side today; some of that belongs on the phone, live, while you speak.
  • Build the rehearsal loop. Cue cards, the audience reacting as you go, the next take. The web has some of this; the phone should have the best version.
  • Work the API. The app talks to an Express backend with a documented OpenAPI surface. You will change both sides when the app needs it.
  • Handle the store plumbing you cannot avoid: subscriptions and passes through App Store and Play billing, sign-in with Apple and Google, deep links.
What we are looking for
  • You have shipped a Flutter app to both stores and kept it alive through OS releases, and you can show it.
  • You have done real audio work on mobile: recording, formats, permissions, background modes, the odd platform channel into Swift or Kotlin.
  • You are comfortable in a Node.js backend and will fix the API rather than work around it.
  • You care about the feeling of the thing. Latency, gestures, what happens on a bad connection.
  • You can run a codebase alone, with reviews from a founder who reads every line.
Nice to have
  • In-app purchase and subscription experience on either store, especially the renewal and refund edge cases.
  • On-device ML or signal processing —anything that runs on the audio while it is being captured.
  • An interest in VR. We have a headset rehearsal mode, and the phone is its companion.
What the first three months look like

Month one: ship a release. Small, but yours, through both stores. Month two: therecording reliability work, with the metrics to prove it. Month three: the liverehearsal loop in beta, and a written plan for what the app is in a year.
