Job summary

The Virgin Islands Museum of Art (VIMA) seeks an accomplished leader to serve as its founding Executive Director in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas. You will guide concept through opening, shape strategy, and build a sustainable organization with a strong staff and fundraising program.

This role requires capital project oversight, fundraising excellence, and a collaborative, community-focused leadership style to connect Virgin Islands culture with national and international audiences.

Qualifications

• Significant senior leadership experience in a museum, nonprofit, or mission-driven organization.
• Track record of fundraising, donor relations, and grantseeking.
• Experience overseeing capital projects or major renovations for public facilities.
• Ability to develop and execute strategic plans and governance.
• Proven ability to engage diverse communities and partners.
• Strong communication and public presentation skills.
• Experience with budgeting and financial management.
• Ability to lead staff and build an effective organizational culture.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Museum from concept through opening, guiding architects, designers, and contractors.
• Shape strategic planning to establish a shared vision for launch and growth.
• Build partnerships with artists, educators, governmental bodies, tourism, and community groups.
• Develop sustainable fundraising programs including foundations, gifts, and grants.
• Recruit, develop, and retain a professional staff and implement administrative systems.
• Oversee exhibitions, educational programs, and public engagement initiatives.
• Represent the museum publicly to advance visibility, support, and community relations.
