Job summary

Care Hero in Boston, MA is seeking a Founding Engineer to design, build, and ship the core product alongside the founder. This zero-to-one role puts you in direct contact with customers and shapes our strategy from day one.

You’ll own end-to-end development—from backend services and APIs to frontend experiences—and you’ll integrate AI capabilities to automate care workflows. This early-stage position rewards ownership, rapid iteration, and collaboration with non-technical stakeholders.

About Care Hero

Care Hero is building the AI teammate for home-based care. Caregiving is the largest and fastest-growing workforce in the US, serving its most vulnerable population — yet care teams are still buried in manual, repetitive administrative work. We use the latest AI and agentic workflows to take that burden off their plates, so agencies can deliver more efficient, more compassionate care to people in their homes.

The Role

As a Founding Engineer, you’ll work side by side with the founder in Boston to design, build, and ship the core product. This is a true zero-to-one role: you’ll talk directly with customers, turn what you hear into working software, and shape our product direction, technical architecture, and culture from the ground up.

What You’ll Do

• Architect and build scalable, secure backend services, APIs, and data pipelines that power real-world care operations
• Integrate cutting-edge AI capabilities — LLMs, agentic workflows, voice AI, and automation — into the product
• Ship across the stack, from backend systems to intuitive frontend experiences, with real ownership of product and design decisions
• Join customer conversations and product discovery, and translate user feedback directly into what we build next
• Define engineering best practices, help make technical hiring decisions, and lay the foundation for a platform that grows with the company

What We’re Looking For

• Strong software engineering fundamentals: modern languages, system design, and experience building and running production-grade applications
• Experience designing scalable, reliable, and secure backend services, APIs, and data pipelines
• Hands-on experience with AI/ML or data-driven products — integrating models into real applications or building with AI platforms and tools
• Comfort with frontend development and a genuine care for user experience
• High ownership and urgency: you thrive on ambiguity, own projects end to end, and ship fast through rapid iteration and experimentation
• Strong communication skills — you can work closely with non-technical stakeholders and care-focused professionals
• Interest in healthcare, home-based care, or mission-driven work where technology supports frontline workers
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

• You’re an engineer with strong product sense — or hungry to build one. You notice how real users actually use the product and the workarounds they invent, and you care about product, design, and customer experience.
• You can build the core product and be trusted to own it in production — because you’ve done both.
• You’re AI native. You don’t wait for AI to be handed to you in a workflow — you reach for it, experiment with it, and think about how it changes what’s possible in the systems you build and the customers you serve.
• You’re obsessed with customer work and getting embedded in customers’ workflows. The best engineers today are the ones closest to the problem.
• You’re energized by the pace of an early-stage startup and by taking end-to-end ownership.

This Role Is Not For You If

You want your role clearly scoped and handed to you. You need a mature eng org, clean processes, or a PM telling you what to build. You’re more comfortable in a support lane than a builder lane. You optimize for comfort over growth.
