Job summary

Earthjustice, headquartered in San Francisco, seeks a founding AVP to design and build the organization’s first evidence, evaluation, and learning function. You will recruit a new team, partner with senior leaders, and integrate learning into program strategy and fundraising.

The role requires a strategic, entrepreneurial leader to shape how Earthjustice tracks impact, informs strategy, and demonstrates results to funders and the public. A graduate degree is preferred but not required.

Qualifications

• Ten plus years of experience in strategy, organizational learning, or systems change.
• Experience in climate, sustainability, environmental, human health, or justice work is valued.
• Proven experience designing frameworks and programs from the ground up.
• Experience designing and leading learning processes (e.g., reflection, evaluation, learning agendas).
• Strong fluency in qualitative and quantitative methods; ability to interpret data for decision-making.
• Experience applying systems thinking to design approaches that adapt over time.
• Experience leading change across teams and embedding new frameworks and ways of working.
• Familiarity with data systems and dashboards; align technology with program needs.
• Experience with funder reporting; NGO or foundation experience welcomed.
• Excellent communication, facilitation, and leadership; translate complex ideas into actionable guidance.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement an organization-wide evidence and learning framework aligned with program strategies and theories of change.
• Establish clear ways to define success and track progress across legal, policy, advocacy, and partnership work.
• Ensure the framework captures results and context, combining data with narrative to show impact and learning over time.
• Drive organization-wide adoption by embedding evidence and learning practices into core workflows and culture.
• Establish learning processes such as strategy reviews and learning agendas to strengthen alignment and continuous improvement.
• Oversee evaluations across priority initiatives and synthesize findings to inform strategy and fundraising.
• Partner with the Technology team to design core data infrastructure, dashboards, and data governance.
• Oversee data governance, quality, and support systems to ensure data integrity and sustained adoption.
• Build relationships with funders and field leaders to share practices and elevate Earthjustice’s approach.
• Represent Earthjustice in external forums and align on measurement approaches with donors.
• Recruit, hire, and manage up to three staff; foster a culture of learning and collaboration.
• Uphold Earthjustice’s mission and values through inclusive leadership and professional development.
