Job description

Forestry Technician Internship

Positions will be located on various National Wildlife Refuges in the Southeast region. Potential locations include Carolina Sandhills NWR in McBee, SC; St. Marks NWR in St. Marks, FL; Okeefenokee NWR in Folkston, GA; Piedmont NWR in Round Oak, GA; Lower Suwanee NWR in Chiefland, FL; Noxubee NWR near Starkville, MS; and Clarks River in Kentucky.

Duration: Approximately 13 weeks between mid‑May and mid‑August. Start day may be flexible to accommodate students needing to complete the May forestry camp before beginning work. Students wishing to receive internship credit should complete an internship agreement or practicum agreement and enroll in the appropriate course.

Responsibilities
  • Collect baseline forest habitat data.
  • Cruise and mark timber to enhance wildlife habitat.
  • Assist with timber sale administration.
  • Perform invasive plant control and monitor wildlife and habitat responses to various forest management treatments.
  • Participate in additional wildlife‑management activities as needed by the refuge.
Qualifications
  • Preferred: Forestry students or recent graduates with an interest in habitat, enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or recent graduates.
  • Preference given to students with basic dendrology, forest mensuration, and silvicultural knowledge or experience.
  • Wildlife students with knowledge and understanding of forest ecology and management are encouraged to apply.
Physical Demands

Drivership required; duties involve outdoor physical work and computer work. Typical schedule: 40 hours per week, with 80% time spent on outdoor work at refuges and 20% on computer work.
