Forest Business Research Intern

The Forest Business and Operations team at the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources is searching for undergraduate students to conduct field research related to forest business during the summer of 2025. Interns will assist graduate students, professors, and staff with field data collection, measurements of soil, trees, and timber harvesting machines, as well as data analysis.

Position Summary

Interns will work as part of a team, traveling to timber harvest sites throughout Georgia and surrounding states. Daily activities will include field data collection, driving to sites, data analysis on computer, and other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Collect field data on soil, trees, and timber harvesting equipment.
  • Perform measurements using standard forestry instruments.
  • Drive a university vehicle to field sites.
  • Analyze collected data on computer.
  • Assist graduate students, professors, and staff with ongoing research projects.
Qualifications
  • Current undergraduate student majoring in forestry or natural resources.
  • Interest in applied forestry and field data collection.
  • Eligible to drive a university vehicle.
  • Ability to work in the field at warm temperatures during summer.
  • Knowledge of basic field measurements (e.g., FANR 3000, FORS 4050).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience using natural resources tools such as clinometers, range finders, or compasses.
Physical Demands
  • Driving and computer work.
  • Outdoor field data collection with exposure to weather and potential travel distances.
  • Carrying and using data collection instruments.
