Job description

Forestry Technician Internship

Employment type: Employee. Anticipated start date: 05/13/2026. Location: Athens Area, Southeast Region National Wildlife Refuges. Duration: approximately 13 weeks from mid‑May to mid‑August. Full‑time 40 hours per week.

Position Summary

Positions are located on various National Wildlife Refuges in the Southeast region (e.g., Carolina Sandhills NWR in McBee SC, St. Marks NWR FL, Okeefenokee NWR GA, Piedmont NWR GA, Lower Suwanee NWR FL, Noxubee NWR MS, Clarks River KY). Primary duties include collecting baseline forest habitat data, cruising and marking timber to enhance wildlife habitat, and assisting with timber sale administration. Duties may also involve invasive plant control, monitoring wildlife and habitat responses to forest management treatments, and other wildlife management activities as required by refuge needs and objectives. Students may be eligible for internship credit through an agreement or practicum.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Physical work at refuges (80% of time).
  • Computer work (20% of time).
  • Collect baseline forest habitat data.
  • Cruise and mark timber for wildlife habitat enhancement.
  • Assist with timber sale administration.
  • Invasive plant control and monitoring of wildlife/habitat responses to treatments.
  • Other wildlife management activities as required by refuge needs and objectives.
Qualifications

Physical Demands

Driving, computer work, and outdoor physical work as needed at refuges. Candidates must be able to perform the physical tasks required for the position.
