Job summary

Champaign County Forest Preserve District in Mahomet, IL, seeks a Maintenance Worker I to perform outdoor maintenance across forest preserve grounds, buildings, and user areas. Hours are weekday mornings to evenings, with some weekends and holidays based on operations.

The role involves mowing, repairs, equipment servicing, event setup, and visitor assistance, requiring physical work outdoors and adherence to safety protocols.

Qualifications

• Experience with (or ability to learn) the use and maintenance of tools of the trade, both powered and non-powered.
• Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions.
• Good communication skills and ability to maintain good working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, volunteers, and the public.
• Ability to work independently in daily operations under general direction and to solve problems as they arise.
• CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or the ability to become certified within 12 months of employment.
• Must be at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Maintains preserve vegetation by mowing, edging, aerating, fertilizing, tree and shrub trimming, planting, pruning, watering, and weed control.
• Gathers, loads, and hauls refuse and vegetation from grounds and user areas.
• Inspects, maintains, and repairs all preserve restrooms including daily cleaning and trash removal.
• Inspects, repairs, and paints park and playground equipment.
• Locks/unlocks rental facilities, sets up for events and rental functions, and ensures facilities are clean and equipped for rentals.
• Inspects facilities, grounds, and user areas for hazards and repairs as needed.
