Job summary

Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society (RGS & AWS) is seeking a Forest Conservation Coordinator for the Southeast Appalachian region. The role focuses on managing grants, writing forest management prescriptions, and coordinating field activities with staff and contractors across several states.

The position combines office work, GIS analysis, and field activities (up to 30% travel), with opportunities to engage with private landowners and government agencies.

Qualifications

  • A degree in forestry or a closely related natural resource field, with experience in forest management, timber sale, and project administration.
  • Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of experience or a master’s with 3+ years preferred.
  • In-depth understanding of active forest management and wildlife habitat, including connections between forest management and wildlife needs, contracts, and environmental regulations.
  • Experience developing and implementing site-specific forest management plans or practices.
  • Excellent networking and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of USDA Forest Service and NRCS processes, regulations, and programs preferred.
  • Experience developing forestry contracts and prospectuses preferred.
  • Experience overseeing contractors and leading staff preferred.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with GPS, ArcGIS, and Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • Produce active forest management deliverables for grants and agreements.
  • Develop forest management prescriptions based on inventory data and best practices.
  • Prepare contracts and prospectuses for active forest management projects.
  • Lead bidding processes and oversee contractors.
  • Track and report project income, payments, and metrics.
  • Prepare and execute agreements and establish reporting schedules.
  • Communicate project details to ensure impact and collaboration.
  • Participate in stakeholder collaboratives to promote forest management.
  • Pursue opportunities to engage on legislative issues and funding opportunities.
  • Maintain GIS analysis and draft habitat restoration plans.
  • Develop annual work plans and coordinate with partner agencies.
