Job summary

The State of Nevada’s Division of Public and Behavioral Health, SNAMHS Stein Forensic Unit in Las Vegas, seeks Forensic Specialists as trainees. The role blends security duties with clinical support, guided by a pathway to Forensic Specialist 2 and 3 after completing required POST and mental health certifications.

The trainee will learn to supervise, document client progress, and participate in daily operations while meeting educational and background checks aligned with POST standards.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of general work experience, one year in a mental health, medical, correctional, law enforcement or related setting; OR one year of college coursework including health, behavioral science or criminal justice and one year of general work experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

• Support clinical staff as part of a treatment team to optimize client care and treatment; report behavior, assist in identifying problems, develop and revise treatment plans, document progress, and discharge clients as assigned; data entry into databases.
• Develop therapeutic relationships with clients; orient clients to unit; spend one-on-one time; facilitate group sessions; chart progress and assist with token economy, calls, work, recreation and understanding legal processes.
• May perform mental health and security duties focusing on therapeutic treatment to support competency to stand trial; prepare clients for competency hearings and facilitate groups on legal processes.
• Operate security controls and monitor staff and clients via video; manage entry/exit of personnel; use radios, intercom, phones, CCTV and alarms; perform perimeter checks and respond to emergencies.
• Supervise clients in various areas to ensure safety; manage searches for contraband; enforce safety policies and assist with restraints under doctor orders.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent

Two years general work experience or one year college coursework in health/behavioral science/criminal justice
