Job summary

The Maryland Department of Health, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, seeks Assistant Medical Examiners to join a committed professional team of forensic pathologists, investigating deaths and performing autopsies as necessary. The primary purpose is to provide certified medical and specialized pathology skills in mandated investigations.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited School of Medicine with an MD or DO or international equivalent.
• Successful completion of an ACGME approved Forensic Fellowship program.
• Eligibility for medical licensure in the State of Maryland (Maryland licensure must be obtained prior to hire).
• Board Certification in Forensic Pathology and Anatomic Pathology.
• Availability to be on 24-hour call 2-3 times per month and to work one weekend per month.

Responsibilities

• Evaluating death scene information.
• Performing autopsies and preparing reports of postmortem examination and autopsies.
• Reviewing medical records, police reports and toxicology reports to determine cause and manner of death.
• Answering inquiries from relatives and other interested parties about cause and manner of death.
• Supervising autopsy technicians.
• Attending daily departmental meetings.
• Collecting evidence for law enforcement during autopsy.
• Teaching Fellows, residents and medical students.
• Testifying in court and attending related meetings.
