Qualifications

• Successful completion of a US DOL registered apprenticeship as an Operating Engineer - Heavy Equipment Technician with journeyman status and 4 years of journey-level experience in repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.
• Alternative: 8 years of journey-level experience with diagnostic/electronic fuel injection knowledge or 6 years with a company/apprenticeship program in Hoisting Engineer.
• A CDL license as issued by the State of Illinois is required

• Monitor mechanics performing diagnostic tests and assess problems and malfunctions.
• Inspect repairs performed by Hoisting Engineer Mechanics.

DEPARTMENT OF FLEET AND FACILITY MANAGEMENT

Starting Salary: $72.80/hour

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City’s collective bargaining agreement with Operating Engineers - Local 150 Heavy Equipment (Bargaining Unit 42). Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

The Foreman of Hoisting Engineers-Mechanics supervises Hoisting Engineer-Mechanics engaged in the repair and maintenance of heavy vehicle and off-road equipment including excavators, hi-lifts, and other construction equipment at service garages or in the field.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Scheduling and overseeing preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
• Monitoring Mechanics conducting diagnostic tests and assessing problems and malfunctions.
• Inspecting repairs performed by Hoisting Engineer Mechanics.
• Monitors and ensures efficient operating shop procedures.
• Assists in troubleshooting complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues with heavy duty equipment. Maintains work records and productivity records

Additional duties may be required for this position.

Qualifications

Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered apprenticeship training program as an Operating Engineer - Heavy Equipment Technician and journeyman status, plus four (4) years of journey-level experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy vehicle and off-road equipment, OR

Should the above criteria not be fulfilled, the following options are available:

• Eight (8) years of journey-level work experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy-duty/off-road equipment and the diagnoses and repair of electronic fuel injection systems
• Successful completion of an industry or company sponsored apprenticeship training program as an Operating/Hoisting Engineer, plus six (6) years of journey-level experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy vehicle and off-road equipment

A commercial driver’s license (CDL) as issued by the State of Illinois is required

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Exposure to loud noise, fumes, or dust, oily or wet environment
• Exposure to hazardous conditions (e.g. heavy machinery)

EQUIPMENT

• Standard office equipment (e.g., telephone, printer, photocopier, fax machine, calculator)
• Computers and peripheral equipment (e.g., personal computer, computer terminals, hand-held computer)
• Personal protective equipment (e.g., hard hat, shoes, glasses, gloves, vest, pads)
• Standard tools and equipment used in servicing heavy off-road equipment (e.g. power tools, welding equipment, hand tools)
• Computerized testing and diagnostic equipment (e.g. computerized engine analyzers)
• Jacks and hoists

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to walk and stand for extended or continuous periods of time
• Ability to quickly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with one's body, arms, and/or legs
• Ability to operate applicable hand tools, power tools, and equipment

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview. Candidates may be required to complete a supervisory assessment. Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after test results have been analyzed and compiled. The interviewed candidate(s) receiving a passing score on the test and possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.
